County CHIPPER PROGRAM Back in Mid-May 2021 for El Granada, Moss Beach and Montara

GET READY!  Mon May 17 - Thu May 20

EVENT. Last year, in 2020, the community chipping program was yet another tremendous success due to the support of the community, San Mateo County Fire Safe Council, The Resource Conservation District and volunteers who helped staff the event.

The combined effort removed almost 800 loads of brush from the yards of residents throughout our community.

The Neighborhood Chipper Program is based on a “you cut, we chip” model. If a fire were to impact our community these efforts would help firefighters better defend our homes and our community.

Can We Talk? Easter Eggs…

OWN VOICE. ~ InPerspective by Gregg Dieguez —

For you old folks, the new definition: “an unexpected or undocumented feature in a piece of computer software …, included as a joke or a bonus.”  … And when you open them, something interesting pops out.

In honor of Easter, this article contains a suite of topics that just open (to mix metaphors) several Pandora’s Boxes of problems and issues to come. They’re each brief, because it will take full articles to get to the bottom of each.  But we need to talk…

THANK YOU and CONGRATULATIONS. Coastside Buzz is all about noticing something is wrong and finding the right person to help you fix the problem.

As Landmark Anniversary Nears, County Urges Residents to Prepare for Earthquakes

Even during a pandemic, natural disasters remain a significant risk.

April 16, 2021. Redwood City – As the state readies to mark the anniversary of the The Great 1906 Earthquake on Sunday, local emergency leaders urge residents not to be caught off guard for natural disasters.

“Although we are emerging from the effects of Covid 19 and the risk of another dangerous fire season caused by drought, there is the ever-present risk of a major earthquake occurring.  Check your emergency supplies and take steps to be prepared,” Dan Belville, director of the San Mateo County Office of Emergency Services (OES), said.

The BIG One: Your Survival Guide for a 7.8
Earthquake a KPCC Radio Production

PODCAST / LINKS.  The best podcast and on-line resource for disaster preparedness that I have seen in 10 years of being CERT, and 5 years being a CERT trainer (community emergency response team). Warning, the podcast is graphic and may make you uncomfortable. Making the podcast made the host, Jacob Margolis, uncomfortable, too. Follow he and his family as they come up with a major earthquake disaster plan.

There’s a 50 percent chance that some time in the next 30 years, Southern California will be crippled by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. It’ll take less than two minutes for more than 10 million people to lose water, power, internet

HMB Coastside History Assoc. Presents: Ohlone Basketweavers: Women’s Essential Creations

HISTORY. The woman looked out to the ocean, letting her eyes rest awhile. She had been working for a long time on the very small, intricate weaving of the plants beneath her hands. It took such time and care to make sure that once filled with water, her new cooking basket would not leak. She had worked all morning in the meadows around the village, harvesting wildflower seeds like Clarkias in a seed basket. The seeds would be roasted on a roasting basket tray by rolling a hot coal around in them, and then made into a nourishing paste added to meals.

Clean Coalition Presents ~ Getting Paid to Go Green; Make Money Leasing an EV

EVs are gaining popularity in the US, particularly in California. Despite misconceptions about EVs being expensive, EVs can be the most cost-effective vehicles available.

Making EVs even more affordable are the many grants, rebates, and incentives that are available in California, especially for income-qualified consumers. With help from the Clean Vehicle Assistance Program and the Clean Vehicle Rebate Project, qualified EV adopters can essentially get paid to drive a car.
But navigating all the options can be challenging and time-consuming.

Gregory Young, a Program Manager at the Clean Coalition, went through the process and will get paid to drive over the 3-year lease he secured on an EV. Gregory shared the benefits of his research process and how others can also get paid to drive electric.

When we discussed the Reimagine SamTrans plan at an earlier Coastside meeting, the group had a lot of good comments. One alternative in Reimagine SamTrans includes a possible “on demand” service on the Coastside.
