A Conversation with CUSD’s Sophia Layne on the District’s Financial Outlook

PODCAST and POWERPOINT. Last week, CUSD Board member, Sophia Layne, and I sat in one of the new library rooms to have a conversation on how school funding works in California and how it affects CUSD.

I originally went to CUSD, Head of Finance’s (Crystal Leach) Coffee and Conversation at Farallone Elementary at the end of the school year. The powerpoint was done by Crystal. Sophia and I jump off the powerpoint for this interview. Follow along.

If you have any questions or comment for Sophia, here is her email. laynes@cabrillo.k12.ca.us

HMB City Council Listens to the HMB Main Street Bridge Barrier Update

VIDEO / POWERPOINT. The Federal Highway Authority and Cal Trans will require ALL bridges in the United States to have “crash tested barriers” by September 2019. This also applies to historic bridges like the Main Street Bridge.

Enjoy the video as City Engineer, Maz Bozorginia, takes you back to the 1900’s, then explains the bridge’s growing pains for the last, almost, 120 years.

The BIG One: Your Survival Guide for a 7.8 Earthquake a KPCC Radio Production

PODCAST / LINKS.  The best podcast and on-line resource for disaster preparedness that I have seen in 10 years of being CERT, and 5 years being a CERT trainer (community emergency response team). Warning, the podcast is graphic and may make you uncomfortable. Making the podcast made the host, Jacob Margolis, uncomfortable, too. Follow he and his family as they come up with a major earthquake disaster plan.

There’s a 50 percent chance that some time in the next 30 years, Southern California will be crippled by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. It’ll take less than two minutes for more than 10 million people to lose water, power, internet. Host Jacob Margolis and Producer Misha Euceph go on a journey to understand what the disaster means for Los Angeles, the U.S. and the world.

Follow along here to find out what people are doing to prepare and what it will take to survive.

BEDTIME STORIES

Bedtime Stories ~ The Crows of Pearblossom by Aldous Huxley

PODCAST.  Story read and sung brilliantly by Joe Flambo! Thanks Joe.

The Crows of Pearblossom is a 1944 short story written by
Aldous Huxley, the English novelist, essayist and critic.   This story, written Christmas of 1944, tells the story of Mr. and Mrs. Crow, who live in a cotton-wood tree at Pearblossom. Due to the Rattlesnake living at the bottom of the tree, Mrs. Crow’s eggs are never able to hatch. After catching the snake eating her 297th egg that year (she does not work on Sundays), Mrs. Crow requests that Mr. Crow go into the hole and kill the snake. Thinking better of it, Mr. Crow confers with his wise friend, Mr. Owl. Mr. Owl bakes mud into two stone eggs and paints them to resemble Mrs. Crow’s eggs. These dummy eggs are left in the nest to trick the Rattlesnake, who unknowingly eats them the next day. When the eggs get to his stomach, they cause the Rattlesnake such pain, that he thrashes about, tying himself in knots around the branches. Mrs. Crow goes on to hatch “four families of seventeen children each” and “uses the snake as a clothesline on which to hang the little crows’ diapers.”  ~Wikipedia
