A Sad “State” of Affairs

OWN VOICE. ~ InPerspective by Gregg Dieguez —

So where do we stand on COVID-19 vaccinations in our ‘First World’ County and State?  Trigger Warning: contains graphic information of disturbing incompetence.  UPDATE: this article has been updated with description of a Trump Admin. campaign to deny state governments any extra funding for the Covid-19 vaccine rollout last fall.

One of my neighbors is an intelligent Texan, which, regional rivalry being what it is, has led to some interesting conversations. Recently he tweaked me about how badly California was rolling out its vaccines, which led me to some comparative research about where “we” stand, where “we” is San Mateo County (SMC), California, and the U.S.… unless you live here…

State Labor Board Closed the Castillo Seed Company Last Thursday For Labor Violations

UPDATE. The Farmworker Advisory Coalition (FAC) reports that the State Labor Board closed the Castillo Seed Company last Thursday, January, 28th, 2021.
All 40 employees were sent home.
The State continues its investigation.

Best case scenario is to find a way to get the workers paid and back to work.

Castillo Seed Company registered in Puerto Rico.

The NTSB Anatomy of the 2019 David Lesh Ocean Plane Crash Near Half Moon Bay

On August 20, 2019, at 1754 Pacific daylight time, Beech A36 airplane, N134P, descended into the Pacific Ocean about 7 nautical miles (nm) southwest of Half Moon Bay, California. The private pilot and passenger were not injured; the airplane sank and was destroyed. The airplane was registered to the pilot who operated it as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed for the local flight which departed from Reid-Hillview Airport of Santa Clara County (RHV) San Jose, California at 1722.

Want to Be a Coastside Beach Ambassador? Waves, Garbage and Permit Education

In response to a continued barrage of ocean deaths over the years, local Stefanie Myhre has decided to do something about it.  Michelle Dragony, also a local, has pledged to help. Danger Will Robinson!!! Look at the wet sand. Look at the dry sand. No room to run as high tide comes in…or a storm rogue wave.

Stefanie is logistics and operations and Michelle will be program development and outreach.

People just do not understand the ocean. Signs don’t work. Only one-on-one human interaction will work.

MCC’s Dan Haggerty Mentions “Sandsavers” as a Simple Solution to Miramar and Mirada Erosion

VIDEO. A natural solution to beach erosion. Midcoast Community Council continues to negotiate the reconstruction of the Medio/Miramar Bridge. The San Mateo County plans call for armoring. The California Coastal Commission’s sea-level rise policy most recently has been retreat, rather than armoring.

“Recognizing the negative effects of seawalls, the Commission has recently been adding a “no future seawall” provision to many permits for coastal development, which requires the property owner to waive future rights to any future shoreline protection.”   ~ Explore Beaches UCSB

Might Sandsavers save our Coastside beaches?

SAM Vision 2040 Committee Asks What Will They Do When Outfalls Have To Go Away

VIDEO. From the Sewer Authority Mid-Coastside meeting 1/25/2021 at 7:00pm. Director Ric Lohman, also Montara Water and Sewer District (MWSD) director, talks about the new SAM Vision 2040 Committee.

They are exploring the idea of MBBR package plants. Do you know what they are?

Caltrans! Medio Bridge Detour at Miramar Needs a Couple of Tweaks For Safety

PHOTOS. As you drop down on to Miramar Drive, there is no where for bikes to go to get out of the way of cars who are also turn right on to Miramar Drive. Cars endanger themselves if they slow down as the cars following behind have a hard time seeing why a car would slow down.

One accident was reported by a nearby neighbor, Dan Charles, on Nextdoor. A bicyclist fell off their bike and had to be taken to the Seton Moss Beach emergency room due to managing the turn with a car.

Here is a possible, easy solution.

Clean Coalition Presents: What CAISO Didn’t Tell You About the August Blackouts

The recording and slides from yesterday’s webinar are now online. Presentation slides are available in PDF format.  Recorded Thursday, 28th, January 2021 at 10am – 11:30am.  Public Utilities Commission President Loretta Lynch and a panel of experts will present.

The California Independent System Operator (CAISO) called rolling blackouts throughout California on 14 and 15 August and threatened blackouts over Labor Day weekend, alleging a lack of sufficient electricity to serve Californians during those heat waves.

CAISO’s Final Root Cause Analysis, published on 13 January 2021, continues to sidestep the key questions. The report only reluctantly admits that CAISO’s own rules allowed over 4,000 MW of electricity to be exported out of California on the day they called the hottest in the century — and that those exports significantly contributed to the blackouts.
