Neighborhoods Participating in “National Night Out” on August 6 can get a $100 Grant

Half Moon Bay, CA – National Night Out is the annual nationwide community-building campaign encouraging police/community partnerships and neighbor-to-neighbor connections, helping to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live.

The City of Half Moon Bay encourages local participation by inviting residents to hold block parties on Tuesday, August 6 2019 and reconnect with their neighbors. The City will help jump-start block parties by offering a $100 gift card that will help offset the costs of putting on a great neighborhood block party. The deadline to register is July 30.
This small grant to participating neighborhood teams can be used to pay for food, beverages, decorations, table and chair rental, or whatever their block party needs to be a success! The application is online at, and residents may get more information or have an application sent to them by contacting Victor Gaitan at 650-750-2010 /
National Night Out is a great opportunity for Half Moon Bay residents to get together, meet new people, re-connect with neighbors, and just spend some time relaxing in an informal social setting,” said Half Moon Bay City Deputy Manager Matthew Chidester. “Getting to know our neighbors is good for neighborhood safety, and makes it easier for people to look out for each other – and that’s great for our entire community.” Depending on the number of block parties and staff availability, the City will try to schedule a visit by a Coastside Fire Protection District fire truck or San Mateo County Sheriff’s vehicle. Most neighbors hold their National Night Out events between 6 and 9 pm.

SFPUC Advanced Rainfall Weather Radar Close Montara Mountain? Or Endagered Butterflies?!

POWERPOINT. According to Besty Rhodes, Public Information Officer for the SFPUC, the gate that went up recently at North Peak Montara Mountain was not put up due to the weather radar project, but because of the sensitive habitat of two rare butterflies, the San Bruno Elfin and Mission Blue.

Alternative hike: Check out the Fifield-Cahill Ridge Trail. Enjoy a 10 mile hike along the Crystal Springs Ridgeline.  Map posted below, as well.

Mavericks Swim Club Hires Coastsider Jim Stretch as the New Head Coach!!

ARTICLE. Coming from the the San Mateo Athletic Club Bulldogs as Head Coach,  Jim Stretch has come home to our local Mavericks Swim Team! I remember working with Jim 15 years ago to develop the Club, Bronze, Silver and Gold swim levels that allowed the team to expand its age reach.

Jim worked as the JV swim coach at Carlmont High School.  Jim also worked as an age group coach with the Maverick’s Swim Club.  In addition, Stretch has served as a USA Swimming Official and has been a USA Swimming recognized coach since 2006.

In 2012, Stretch became the new Head Coach of the boys and girls swim program up at the HMBHS, while his daughters Britany and Sarah were on the team.

And now he is back!

Here is the Official Press Release from the Mavericks Swimming Association Board.

Half Moon Bay/Coastside Chamber of Commerce’s Farm, Fish, Flowers Tour

PHOTO-ESSAY. In the fall of 2015, POST worked with Christine Pielenz and Bill Laven to protect their 300-acre Potrero Nuevo Farm with an affirmative agricultural easement. This farm is located in Tunitas Creek Valley of Half Moon Bay, and they make crop rotation, cover cropping and organic compost an integrated part of their operation. The easement protects the farm from development and ensures a portion of the property will always remain in agricultural production.

With the property’s rich soils, rolling hills, organic produce, migratory bird habitat, two wonderful owners and a popular bike hut… there are so many reasons to love this farm, we have listed our top ten in this digital book.  ~ By Blair Friedeman, Director of Marketing for POST

Bedtime Stories ~ Where the Wild Things Are!

PODCAST.  Read by Michelle Dragony.  Where the Wild Things Are is a 1963 children’s picture book by American writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak, originally published by Harper & Row. The book has been adapted into other media several times, including an animated short in 1974 (with an updated version in 1988); a 1980 opera; and a live-action 2009 feature-film adaptation, directed by Spike Jonze. The book had sold over 19 million copies worldwide as of 2009, with 10 million of those being in the United States.[2]

Sendak won the annual Caldecott Medal from the children’s librarians in 1964, recognizing Wild Things as the previous year’s “most distinguished American picture book for children”.[3] It was voted the number one picture book in a 2012 survey of School Library Journal readers, not for the first time. ~ Wikipedia
