Wrecks at Franklin Point and the Shipwreck Cemetary ~ HMB History Lecture

HMB Coastside History Association presents maritime history event with Mark Hylkema, Cultural Resources Program Manager & Tribal Liaison/Archaeologist, Santa Cruz District, California State Parks.

Mark has 39 years of experience in California archaeology and Native American culture.

Between 1865 and 1867, three consecutive shipwrecks occurred along the rocky coast of Año Nuevo State Park, resulting in the loss of many passengers and sailors. After their sailing ships miscalculated their positions and “struck the rocks,” many of the victims were buried in a small area of sand dunes at Franklin Point. In response to these maritime tragedies, Pigeon Point Lighthouse was established in 1872.

Residential Rental Security Measures Approved for City of Half Moon Bay

VIDEO. Watch or listen to the discussion. Approved by City Council persons Penrose, Rarback and Brownstone. Eisen and Ruddock were absent.

From Staff Report for 12/3/19 City Council Meeting:

Part of the proposed amendments regulate the relationship between landlords and tenants in the City of Half Moon Bay. These amendments are not anticipated to have an impact on City finances. The remainder of the amendments establish a City-funded mediation program for landlords and tenants.

Having conferred with staff in other cities, it is anticipated that the cost of mediation services can be covered by either Community Development or Community Services budgets. If the expense is unexpectedly higher than these budgets can support, it is possible for City Council to allocate monies from the Affordable Housing Fund to support this activity as an eligible use of that fund; however, staff recommends not drawing down the Affordable Housing Fund for such programmatic activities unless absolutely necessary.
