ALAS Farmworker Multi-Use Van Totaled Before Christmas; $25k in Donations Needed

PRESS RELEASE. From Ayudando Latinos a Soñar’s (ALAS) Angels of ALAS member Lizette Diaz

As heart breaking as this sounds, the ALAS (Ayudando Latinos a Soñar) “the donated multi-use van”was totaled on December 20, 2021 when it was involved in a car accident on Hwy. 92. It was hit by another vehicle while Case Managers Jorge and Norma were on their way to pick up donations in San Mateo.

The insurance deemed the van a total loss and paid little on the claim.

Harbor District Works with Owner and USCG to Remove the Unregistered, Non-Operable Beached Vanadis Sailboat

PRESS RELEASE. From the San Mateo County Harbor District, Pillar Point Harbor District’s General Manager, Jim Pruett on January 31st, 2022.

The Harbor District is working with the owner of the vessel to safely remove the vessel from the beach.

The vessel is too far up the beach for the assets in Pillar Point to remove it, and a professional company will be needed to remove the vessel while protecting the environment.


City Staff Struggle to Align Residents Traffic Calming Needs on Poplar with “Complete Streets” ADA Funding Requirements

n December 14, 2021, the Planning Commission considered the City of Half Moon Bay’s application for a Coastal Development Permit and Tree Removal Permit to allow construction of the Poplar Street Traffic Calming and Safety Project (Poplar Project). The Planning Commission heard testimony, deliberated, and continued the matter by a vote of 3-0-2 (with two members recused due to FPPC conflicts of interest).

By this memo, the City Manager requests that jurisdiction over the Poplar Project be transferred to the City Council pursuant to Half Moon Bay Municipal Code 18.20.050.

Consideration of a Coastal Development Permit, for the County Parks Department’s Off-Leash Dog Recreation Pilot Program.

The proposed pilot program is limited to Pillar Point Bluffs and Quarry Park, located in the unincorporated Moss Beach and El Granada areas of San Mateo County.

This project is appealable to the California Coastal Commission.

The application was deemed complete on November 23, 2021.

Coastside community members are invited to a virtual meeting on Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. to hear representatives with San Mateo County Parks, San Mateo Resource Conservation District, and CAL FIRE discuss defensible space, home hardening, and what public resources are available for reducing wildfire risk.

Speakers will also provide information on current initiatives and projects on the Coastside and throughout the County that are addressing wildfire risk reduction, community safety, and fuel reduction.

Julliard trained composer, saxophonist and bandleader, Immanuel Wilkens, is a 23-year-old prodigy whose debut recording, Omega was released by Blue Note Records to critical acclaim. Having worked with his band over the last four years, Wilkins’ work has been recognized with accolades from The National Jazz Museum in Harlem to NPR’s nomination for “Best Debut Jazz Recording of 2020.” More recently in 2021 he won the LetterOne Rising Stars Jazz Award. Wilkens tours the world performing and accompanying performers as diverse as Bob Dylan and Wynton Marsalis.

The San Carlos Airport based Upwind Scholarship Program is currently accepting applications.

Upwind provides a scholarship that includes flight and ground training for a high school student to prepare them to obtain their Private Pilot certificate during the summer between their junior and senior year.

The Upwind Summer Scholarship Program has awarded 32 scholarships since 2013.

HMB Coastside History Jail Museum is Closed Again…

The Coastside History Museum in the Jail at 505 Johnston St has reopened  Saturday and Sunday with limited hours (usually 12-2).  Masks are optional for fully vaccinated visitors, otherwise masks are required. As part of Make It Main Street, it will be open from 3 to 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month.
