OWN VOICE. The topic of Sweden has become another politically/ideologically polarizing one during the Pandemic. Some on the Left seem to hope that Sweden suffers catastrophic deaths to help justify the societal restrictions they favor here – to prioritize lives over finances. Some on the Right seem to hope Sweden succeeds in “staying open” with low or comparable deaths to justify their demands for “freedom” and an end to CV-19-driven restrictions which are damaging our economy. Time will tell, but it is possible that NEITHER side will get the proof that they want, and that the REAL lesson from Sweden is: C) None of the Above.

COVID LETTER. Hello Coastsiders,
I do not know about you, but to me this week felt like Groundhog day. Cue up Sonny & Cher – I Got You Babe playing on the alarm clock every morning!
In addition to opportunities to volunteer locally, The Office of the Governor/California Volunteers is building a database of people who want to volunteer to help when needed. This is not part of Coastside CERT but we have been asked to share this link. California Volunteers and Listos California are the two State-wide programs that oversee our capacity-building grant. We have described to them what CERTs on the Coastside have been doing and they are pleased with the response and resiliency of our community.
There are so many organizations helping Coastsiders get through this tough time. Four local nonprofits in particular stand out for meeting the immediate needs of our most vulnerable residents:

DONATION REQUEST.
Dear Friends,
In 2020, Abundant Grace Coastside Worker purchased 515 Kelly Avenue to become our new Workforce Development Center – a place for our neighbors experiencing homelessness to shower and do laundry, meet with case managers, get help with a resume or job application, and participate in our work readiness programs on the Coast. The new Center has been critical in our work to support homeless Coastsiders during the current Coronavirus pandemic. Even though we are not open, we have been able to use the Center to distribute food and supplies and keep tabs on our clients.

Remote Testing?
In response to the COVID-19 crisis, VECs around the country have—and rightly so—shut down their exam sessions. That has, of course, disappointed a number of folks trying to get their Tech licenses and those who are taking this time to study for General or Extra Class licenses.
The answer is for VECs to ramp up remote testing. This has been allowed since 2014, when the FCC published Report and Order FCC 14-74.

California defines Certified Farmers’ Markets as “essential services” in the Shelter in Place order. When we open for the season there will be several changes in place to support the wellbeing of our farmers, our staff, and our shoppers. We are asking the community to keep these protocols in mind, and be as committed to keeping our local farmers, ranchers, fishers and foodmakers healthy during this remarkable time as we are committed to doing the same for you.

The 2020 Left Coast Annual (LCA) Exhibition was scheduled to open at Sanchez Art Center, Pacifica, on Friday April 10, 2020. As the world turned upside down with the spread of COVID-19, it became clear that the exhibition would not be able to take place in-person as communities responded to shelter-in-place orders to protect public health. Artists and Sanchez Art Center Staff, (Janet Barker, Program Manager and Cindy Abbott, Executive Director) pivoted to create this first show in new virtual galleries.
