Wrecks at Franklin Point and the Shipwreck Cemetary ~ HMB History Lecture

“Perils of a Leeward Shore”

 Franklin Point Historic Shipwreck Cemetery,

Año Nuevo State Park

Date: Tuesday, December 17, 2019

Place: Portuguese Culture Center

724 Kelly Street, Half Moon Bay

Time: 5:30 p.m. doors open – finger foods and refreshments

           6:00 p.m. – program begins

The public is welcome – no charge – bring a friend!

The Half Moon Bay History Association presents another entertaining and informative speaker’s event – we will be digging into our past even more than ever!

On December 17, 2019, please join us for a most unusual maritime history event with Mark Hylkema, Cultural Resources Program Manager & Tribal Liaison/Archaeologist, Santa Cruz District, California State Parks.

Mark has 39 years of experience in California archaeology and Native American culture.

Between 1865 and 1867, three consecutive shipwrecks occurred along the rocky coast of Año Nuevo State Park, resulting in the loss of many passengers and sailors. After their sailing ships miscalculated their positions and “struck the rocks,” many of the victims were buried in a small area of sand dunes at Franklin Point. In response to these maritime tragedies, Pigeon Point Lighthouse was established in 1872.

Surfing for Life Documentary ~ 2 Showings at Seniors Center and Odd Fellows

Saturday, December 14
3pm – Senior Coastsiders, 925 Main Street
7:30pm – Odd Fellows Hall, 925 Main Street

An award-winning documentary narrated by Beau Bridges, Surfing for Life profiles ten legendary surfers, who model healthy aging by staying active and engaged into their senor decades. The film’s interviews, day-in-the-life footage, and wealth of archival material provide a powerful antidote to the negative images of aging presented in America’s youth-obsessed culture.

Three-time Emmy Award-winning filmmaker David L. Brown will be present for a Q&A after the screenings.

“A treasure..perhaps the most intelligent treatment of surfing ever captured on film.”
Bruce Jenkins, SF Chronicle

Please DON’T FLUSH “Flushable” Wipes Down the Toilet

VIDEO. Trash, don’t flush.  Just because the label says “flushable” on the wipes container, does NOT mean you should flush them.  We are trapped by bad marketing and a powerful wipes lobby.

Wipes and rags are a huge problem for Sewer Authority Mid-Coastside (SAM). Ultimately, the costs will be passed on to SAM customers.

If you have a baby in your life, have a no-flush conversation with their parent, or caregiver.
