Puente Inspires and Trains Farm Workers to Raise their Voices to Become a Force for Advocacy

PUENTE NEWSROOM. January 20th, 2022.

Benjamin Cruz Lopez (whose name has been changed) has a recurring fantasy: that one day, the father of three, who harvests spinach, kale and brussels sprouts on a farm south of Pescadero, would feel valued by his boss.

“I think it’s been about 25 years I’ve been working here, and my boss has never come up to me to ask, ‘Benjamin, how long have you been working for me? Twenty-five years?… Okay, here’s a paid vacation.’”

“We don’t get vacations paid here. We don’t get paid holidays,” he says.

Benjamin learned crucial new information about his rights and entitlements at a “Know Your Rights” workshop in November, organized by Puente and taught by Salinas Community Worker Jesus Lopez and attorney Angelica Preciado, both of CRLA (California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc.)
