"Are You Prepared?" Memorial Day

Shelter-in-Place Disaster Prep Weekend.

We want to teach people how to prepare before disaster and how to shelter in place after a disaster.

My name is Michelle Dragony. I am a CERT trainer. CERT is a FEMA civilian program for disaster preparedness. I work with HMB Battalion Chief Dave Cosgrave to help the coastside become prepared for disasters like storms, fires and a major earthquake.

To that end, I have created the Memorial Day Shelter in Place Disaster Prep Weekend Event.

  • The event would run from Saturday 9am to Sunday 9am.
  • We would ask people to shelter in place in their front yard or backyard where they would set up their tent and get their survival food out and see what tools they don’t have and what they wish they had, and the like.
  • We would also be doing a FRS/HAM radio communication exercise at some point during that 24 hour period. We have 25 neighborhoods and we need 50 (Two 12-hour shifts) ham radio operators to cover the disaster like a 7.3 earthquake.
  • Handout flyers at Hassett Hardware and New Leaf.
  • Saturday evening will be neighborhood BBQ block parties, Coastside-wide, where everybody gets their disaster food out and they try to eat it. This exercise will achieve several things:
    • They will decide what they would really eat in a disaster (like, some bars are really bad!)
    • Get them to rotate their food on a yearly basis.
    • Donate rotated food to Coastside Hope.
    • Give people a chance to network.
    • Use the BBQ block-party angle to promote safe BBQing demo. Maybe demo some of the grass-fed beef.
  • Some people can sleep out on Saturday night to check their camp gear, and for fun.
  • Pack up Sunday morning. Continue presence at Hassett Hardware and New Leaf handing out magnets and flyers.
  • We are also working to include a  POD exercise at Harbor, Saturday and a DART exercise at airport on Sunday.

This will be a yearly event so it creates a culture of preparedness, over time.

This event is supported by the City of HMB, the Coastside Chamber, CEAP, Cal Fire, OES.

Home and Car Emergency Supply Checklists ~ Are you Prepared?

ARTICLES / LINKS. Are you prepared?

Here are 4 disaster prep checklists. Everyone has unique needs. Take 5 minutes and peruse these lists. Highlight things you have in one color, highlight the things YOU DON’T have in another color. Then, go to Hassett Hardware and buy what you need!

Here I have curated 4 disaster/emergency checklists. The first is the most detailed at 7 pages, and is exhaustive, last is a 1-pager.

1. Seven Steps to Earthquake and Disaster Preparation

Step 1: Secure Your Space.

Step 2: Create a Plan.

Step 3: Prepare Disaster Kits.

Step 4: Strengthen Your Home.

Step 5: Drop, Cover and Hold On during a Quake; Head north of HWY 1 in Tsunami; Head water during fire ~ THEN GO HOME AND SHELTER IN PLACE.  STAY OFF THE ROADS SO FIRST RESPONDERS CAN MOVE FREELY.

Step 6: Recover ~ Check for Injuries and Damage.

Step 7:  Follow Your Plan

Bedtime Stories ~ Velma Gratch & the Way Cool Butterfly

NOW VIDEO and PODCAST. It’s hard to be Velma, the littlest Gratch, entering the first grade. That’s because everyone has marvelous memories of her two older sisters, who were practically perfect first graders. Poor Velma—people can barely remember her name. But all that changes on a class trip to the magnificent Butterfly Conservatory—a place neither of her sisters has ever been. When a monarch roosts on Velma’s finger and won’t budge for days . . . well, no one will forget Velma ever again. Acclaimed and bestselling illustrator Kevin Hawkes and author Alan Madison celebrate everything butterfly—from migration to metamorphosis. Watch as Velma Gratch metamorphosizes from a timid first grader into a confident young scientist!
