Do You Have Something to Contribute to the Coastside Homeless Shelter Advisory Committee?

PRESS RELEASE.

In December 2020, the County of San Mateo acquired the Coastside Inn hotel in Half Moon Bay in order to create a new shelter program to assist people experiencing homelessness. There were no homeless shelters on the San Mateo County coastside, and after many years of exploration and attempts from various stakeholders to address this service gap, a unique opportunity was presented where the County received time-limited federal funding and was able to identify a building for sale that was appropriate to develop a non-congregate homeless shelter. These circumstances aligned efforts to bring site-based services to the coast that would also make progress towards the County’s goal of reaching a functional zero level of homelessness. The City of Half Moon Bay is supportive of these efforts and desires to work collaboratively with the County and our community on addressing homelessness on the coast.

High and Dry in Pacifica

OWN VOICE. ~ InPerspective by Gregg Dieguez —

With all the concern about sea level rise, bluff erosion and Managed Retreat, users of SFPUC/Hetch Hetchy water (which includes Pacifica) are about to wake up to another problem: water supply.  Put another way, would you rather have one third the water, or pay five times the price for it?

While the Pacifica City Council has been trying to cram more population into floodplains, wetlands, and onto landslide zones on hills, it seems to have missed that California has a water problem.  And that water supply issue should be at the center of any city’s long term planning.  “What water problem?”, you ask.

San Mateo Office of Emergency Services (OES) Returns to County Manager’s Office

PRESS RELEASE. From San Mateo County Communication Officer, Michelle Durand, March 10th, 2021.

Office of Emergency Services (OES) was separated from the County Manager’s Office (CMO) about 25  years ago. At the time, there was a statewide push to move OES to the Sheriff’s Office if it wasn’t  getting the attention it required. Mike Callagy is our County Manager.

Since the County Manager is the Incident Commander or director of  all San Mateo County operations, in all declared emergencies, Mike Callagy made the decision, last September, to move OES  back to his office and provide new leadership and a different level of service to the community and emergency organizations, like CEAP and Coastside Cert.

What are PFAS or “Forever Chemicals” and Why Should We Care on the Coastside?

ARTICLE. “DARK WATERS” COME TO ORANGE COUNTY by Jeremy N. Jungreis and Jason Dadakis

Every generation seems to face a new challenge in cleaning up or remediating  chemicals previously believed to be safe.  In the past, it was Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) routinely sprayed on dirt roads to suppress dust, or volatile organic com pounds (solvents or VOCs) ubiquitous in dry  cleaning and other degreasing operations that  leaked into the groundwater. Both chemicals  were allegedly linked to increased cancer risk  and other adverse health effects through a variety of exposure pathways—including drinking water.
