City of Half Moon Bay Taking Steps to Protect Coastal Trail Users

PHOTO-ESSAY and VIDEO.  Temporary Safety Fencing to be Installed on Eroding Bluff Near Poplar Beach

The City of Half Moon Bay will soon be installing temporary safety fencing along the bluff adjacent to the Coastal Trail at several locations near Poplar Beach, due to encroaching erosion which is threatening to undermine parts of the bluff (see photos below).
Due to the significant amount of rainfall we’ve recently received, significant additional erosion along the bluff adjacent to the Coastal Trail has become more evident. After examining the bluff and trail area and assessing the amount of erosion there on Tuesday, the City decided, in an abundance of caution, to install safety fencing to alert trail users and maintain the public’s safety in the area of erosion. Temporary fencing has been ordered, and installation is anticipated to take place within seven-to-ten days.
The City reminds trail users to stay on the paved Coastal Trail, and stay away from the edges of the bluff.  >> CLICK FOR MORE

Power Report By City of HMB Vice Mayor Adam Eisen
ARTICLE.   Last week, we had a 60KD (60,000 volt) transmission line that had an insulator that cracked (there are usually a few on each transmission line).

Due to our location with the salty air, which speeds up the corrosion of the equipment, and rough storms the insulator broke.

When one cracks, you must replace them all.

Due to the remote location of the transmission line, the workers had to physically walk to the location in the storm, since it was not accessible by vehicle.  Bad weather and tough location also contributed to the length of time it took to get power back, the workers had to take numerous trips walking back and forth with the equipment and tools in the storm.  ~ Adam Eisen

Devils Slide on Highway 1 Has No Backup Generator

ARTICLE.  Wonder why Devils Slide was closed overnight?

There is a backup battery that is designed to last 90 minutes. But why, in an area prone to electrical outages, was no generator included in a tunnel that has lots of safety features, that require electricity to work. Without power the call boxes, fire alarms cameras and smoke sensors won’t work.

Additionally, there are 3 tunnel operators staffed at the south-east end of the tunnel 24/7/365. Again, with no power they won’t be able to see or do anything.

Call Jerry Hill’s Office at 650-212-3313 to let them know what you think.

I called their Communication office for an answer to this question…Stay tuned.

Coastside FARMERS’ Market in Half Moon Bay

Opens EARLY this year.
We are a farmer-directed Certifed Market designed to link Coastside residents with their neighbors — the Coastside farmers, ranchers, fishermen and culinary artisans that produce some of the most beautiful, nutritious and creative food in the world.

Twice a week we showcase these outstanding producers, as well as providing an incubator for emerging local businesses and a forum for our many community-serving nonprofits.

We serve the Coastside community from Pacifica to Pescadero, and the many visitors to the area, and offer a resilient forum for direct relationships to develop and endure between the people of our community and those who produce our food.

WE ARE PROUD TO BE PART OF THE COASTSIDE COMMUNITY

Live Podcast recording of a discussion by The Wise Consumer featuring Shell Cleave, the Founder of Sea Hugger, and Autumn Cleave, the Chair of the Bay Area Pollution Prevention Group. This discussion focuses on the dangers of marine plastic and what we can do to be a part of the solution, not the pollution.

We will also have refreshments and raffle a Sustainable Lifestyle Basket.

Come by and listen, then go for a paddle.
