The Archer Center Spotlight: October 2015

Archer Center Hosts Campus Coordinator Conference

This month, The Archer Center hosted a conference for the staff and faculty who serve as Campus Coordinators for the Archer Fellowship Program and Graduate Program in Public Policy on the UT System campuses. Campus Coordinators facilitate on-campus recruiting and marketing efforts, assist prospective students with the application process, and help selected Archer Fellows navigate campus-specific logistics such as course credit and financial aid. The conference featured planning sessions, discussions on best practices, and included an evening reception at the Archer Fellows' new housing location attended by alumni, the Fall 2015 Archer Fellows, and internship supervisors.

Fall 2015 Archer Fellows Network Across D.C.

Just over halfway through their semester, the Fall 2015 Archer Fellows are keeping busy with their internships, classes, and a variety of networking activities in the nation's capital. This month, many of them participated in events during Longhorns on the Hill, a day of advocacy for UT Austin hosted by Texas Exes. Throughout the day, Fellows met with Members of Congress, prominent UT Austin alumni, and President Greg Fenves who praised the Archer Fellowship Program and current Fellows during his remarks at the day's closing reception. Additionally, the cohort also had their second session of class with Dr. John Daly, and heard from panels of Archer Center alumni and supporters about attending graduate and law school. Many of the Fellows also took advantage of the White House fall garden tours and several of them enjoyed a trip to New York City. Keep up with their adventures for the remaining six weeks of the semester by following The Archer Center on Instagram!

Alumna Travels the Country Providing Pro Bono Legal Services

Fall 2003 Archer Fellow alumna Melanie Gleason is currently traveling across the U.S. providing pro bono legal services to communities in inner cities and rural areas. Gleason attended UT Austin and then spent several years as a teacher and organizer in urban communities. Upon earning her law degree from Golden Gate University School of Law, she wanted to do something to make a meaningful impact in the legal field and continue serving the underrepresented communities she had previously worked with. Gleason launched her project, Attorney on the Move, this summer starting in Delano, California. Learn more about her project and keep up with her journey by reading her blog or following her on Instagram.
