The Archer Center Spotlight: April 2016

The Archer Center Celebrates 15 Years

This month, The Archer Center hosted kickoff receptions in Washington, D.C., and Texas to celebrate the previous 15 years of educating the next generation of leaders from Texas and raise funds to support the next 15 years of Archer Fellows. Both events were successful thanks to our generous sponsors and alumni.

Celebration events will continue throughout 2016 in cities across Texas and in Washington with UT Austin President Gregory Fenves, U.S. Congressman Ted Poe, Texas House Speaker Joe Straus, U.S. House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady, Paul Begala and Chancellor William H. McRaven, among other special guests.

Sponsorship opportunities are still available. Contact Archer Center Director Katie Romano with questions.

Spring 2016 Archer Fellows Go All The Way

The Spring 2016 Archer Fellows enjoyed the Tony award-winning drama "All the Way" at the Arena Stage this month. The play details President Lyndon B. Johnson's presidency following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Prior to the performance, Archer Center professor Joel Swerdlow, Arena Stage executive director Edgar Dobie and longtime Archer Center supporter Marty Bell gave a backstage tour and lecture to the cohort about President Johnson and his administration.

The Spring 2016 Archer Fellows finished their fellowship in our nation's capital with a graduation luncheon and ceremony with Chairman Bill Archer, attended a Washington Nationals baseball game and enjoyed a reception in their honor with Archer Center staff and alumni. Stay tuned to The Archer Center Spotlight and follow us on Facebook and Instagram, as the Summer 2016 Graduate Fellows arrive in Washington next month!

Join The Friends of The Archer Center Trust

The Friends of The Archer Center Trust helps educate the next generation of leaders from Texas by providing vital financial support to The Archer Center and its students. Trustees commit to contribute or raise a minimum of $500 annually and have direct input as to how their donations are used. Each year, the Trust is presented with several initiatives developed by Archer Center staff and the Archer Fellow Alumni Association (AFAA), which they then vote on to determine the allocation of funds. The Friends of The Archer Center Trust is an important building block toward sustainable fundraising in support of current and future Archer Fellows and is a unique way for supporters and alumni to have a significant impact on The Archer Center's future.

To join the Trust, make an online donation through The Archer Center’s online giving portal and select “Archer Center Trust” from the drop-down designation menu under “Donation Information.”

To be part of the 2016 Trust, please make your total contribution by May 31, 2016. Please contact Archer Center Director Katie Romano with questions. All donations are tax-deductible.

Farewell to Celina Artusi

After two years at The Archer Center, Celina Artusi is leaving her position as Recruitment and Fellowship Coordinator to pursue other exciting endeavors. As the recruitment lead, Celina is the first person to come in contact with prospective Archer Fellows. Her dedication and hard work are two of the many reasons The Archer Center continues to have such an impressive and diverse group of students each semester. An Archer Center alumna, Celina has used her experience to enhance our operations. Please join us in wishing her continued success in the future.

AFAA and Current Fellows Enjoy Scenic Run

On a drizzly Saturday morning, Summer 2013 Graduate Fellow alumna Christine Duchouquette led a seven-mile run with four current Archer Fellows: Kathleen Alva, Conor Danaher, Preston Rose and Caitlyn Valadez. Together, they represented UT Austin, UT Dallas and UT San Antonio! Their path began at the current Archer fellow housing at Senate Square to the White House and past the World War II Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the FDR Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial. It was a great way for the current fellows and alumni to experience D.C.'s unique history and beauty. Duchouquette ran her fourth half marathon this year and she looks forward to more runs with future Archer Fellows and alumni.
