The Archer Center Spotlight: February 2016

Spring 2016 Archer Fellows pose with Virginia McLaurin (center), the 106-year-old whose visit to the White House made headlines across the country.

Spring 2016 Archer Fellows Inspired by Special Guest

With nearly two months of the Archer Fellowship Program under their belts, the Spring 2016 Archer Fellows are thriving in the nation's capital. This month, the students have attended class in locations such as the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, explored D.C., and heard from a variety of guest speakers. One guest was a special surprise to the cohort: 106-year-old Virginia McLaurin (affectionately known as Grandma Virginia) spoke with the Archer Fellows just days after her visit to the White House became a viral Internet sensation. McLaurin's joyful meeting with President Barack Obama and the First Lady that fulfilled one of her lifelong dreams has garnered more than 61 million views on Facebook. "She makes everyone around her laugh, and her charisma is contagious," said UT San Antonio Archer Fellow Pavi Bambekova. "Hearing her speak was a true inspiration."

For additional updates on the current Fellows, follow us on Facebook and Instagram, and stay tuned to next month's Spotlight.
