Pine marten in the snow, by Annette Cozzi
It's not over yet!

Greetings from beautiful Bearskin Lodge on the Gunflint Trail,

One of the most beautiful autumns in memory abruptly became winter last week. We're reluctantly thinking winter might be here to stay. After a long stretch of 50 - 60 degree weather, nice enough weather that our geraniums never even froze, we were hit with snow that never seems to stop. We held out hope for a few days that our warm fall weather would return, but the constant snow falling from the sky probably indicates otherwise.

We love November for wildlife watching. This fresh snow has intensified our animal sightings. Intriguing tracks are everywhere now -- wolves, moose, and otters, especially. The snowshoe hares didn't get the memo about the early snowfall, so only their ears and feet have turned white. They're too visible against the white ground, so their predators are in hot pursuit. We watched a pine marten try to run down a hare right in front of the lodge -- and the hare survived the chase. We've also reached that magical time of late fall when the chickadees and nuthatches forget they're supposed to be afraid of us and will land on our hands for birdseed, like we're in a Disney princess movie. It's a time of year not many people get to experience on the Gunflint Trail.

We're skiing!  Quinn groomed Summer Home and Campground trails, so skiers have been out on the trails all week. Right now we have early "early skiing."  Weather conditions would have to take a dramatic turn for all this snow to disappear. It looks like we can safely assume that, as always, there will be snow at Bearskin for the coming winter ski season.

Holiday ski trips:  The post Christmas week is full; it's unlikely we will have any cancellations at this point. If you're working around a school schedule, take a close look at this year's school vacation end date -- a number of schools have many days off after January 1 this year. These dates are not all booked at Bearskin and even better, the rates go back to regular winter rates. Want to be here for the holiday next year?  Call us on January 1 to see which cabins did not re-book for 2018.

MLK and President's Weekend:  We still have a few openings for these favorite three-day weekends. There are more three-night options available for MLK.  President's Weekend has availability if you have a bit of flexibility on your arrival date.

Special offers
  • 3 nights for the price of 2 / Early Winter Special:  Now through December 10 (excluding Thanksgiving, November 23 – 26). Book two nights, request the special, and we will give you a third night for free. Ask for the Newsletter Special; only available on new reservations. Due to deep cleaning and our various quiet-season remodeling projects, not all cabins are available for all dates. Call us for specific cabin availability.
Holiday Shopping:  Yes, you can order your favorite Bearskin sweatshirt, mug, or gift as a present! We'll send you photos if you can't recall which item you want. Bearskin gift certificates are also a great present idea. Call or e-mail us and we will help you shop.  Shipping from our area can be a bit slow, so we recommend ordering before December 15.

Best wishes from all of us at Bearskin!  We hope to see you soon.
