August Big Boat Day!

A special thanks to Mike McNiff, Pim Epler, Dan Fisher, and Rick Andrews for bringing their big boats to class and taking all of our kids sailing!  All the kids said it was one of the best days of the summer!

SHYC JR Awards Dinner
Thurs August 18th at 5:30PM.

Please join us for a great end of summer celebration, slide show, and awards ceremony.  Everyone is invited to attend.  Dinner will be provided free of charge to all program kids and families.  Dress code = yacht club attire (dresses and collar shirts).

GREEN OPTI TEAM

Our SHYC Green Team sailors have hit their stride and started going to travel regattas!  A team of 10 SHYC green sailors went to the Wadawanuck Green Fleet Fun Regatta on Aug 5th and had a blast.  This Friday, our green team hit the road again and went to the Madison Beach Club Regatta.  Wylder Smith finished in first, followed closely by teammate Gus Fichtenholtz. Keep up the good work Green Team! Thanks Coach Casey!

More Race Team Action!

ECSA All-Start Regatta
Coach Maura took our top sailors to the ECSA All-Star Regatta held at the US Coast Guard Academy.  Congrats to our 2 teams of Penelope Weekes & Liv Streeter and Bryar Russel & Katherine Amatruda for representing SHYC!

Madison Beach Club Regatta
This past Friday we sent a huge SHYC race team of 12 Opti sailors and 8 420 sailors to the MBC regatta!  Ike and Simon were 2nd and 3rd in the OPTI RWB fleet.  Wylder Smith and Gus Fichtenholtz took top 2 in the Green Fleet.  Penelope & Liv took 3rd place in the 420 fleet.  Go SHYC!!  Thanks to our awesome race coaches for great coaching and all the logistics help!

Opti 1 & 2 - Sailing

Our morning Opti sailors have been having a terrific time and learning lots!  One day last week everyone sailed all the way to Outer Island in the Thimbles and back - what a great long distance sail! Another day they watched the NYYC Cruise boats parade out of the harbor.

First Annual Boat Parade!
The first annual boat parade was a great hit with the morning sailors - everyone came in costumes and decorated their yachts for a harbor sail.

Sea-Squirts!
The Sea Squirts have had a very exciting few weeks! One day they toughed it out in heavy wind and practiced the hot dog drill in the harbor.  The next day they sailed out of the harbor for the first time - all of the Sea Squirts successfully sailed to Joshua's Cove and back without being towed.  Look at this boat lifting teamwork!

420 - Sailing & Racing

Our 420 sailors are working hard and learning lots - with a focus on spinnakers, racing, and trapeze work!  One day everyone sailed to Faulkner Island and back, using traps and chutes!  Last Saturday, nearly all our 420 kids raced in the Commodores Cup, SHYC's annual double handed champs.  On Thursday we had three 420 teams of girls travel to the Weakapaug Girl Power 420 Regatta.   On Friday, four teams took our new 420s to the MBC Regatta - Penelope Weekes finished a strong 3rd place!

JR Tennis - SHYC Champs

The August Parent/Child was a huge success, everyone had a terrific time.  This weekend, the SHYC Club Champs begin on Sunday, with competition continuing into next week.

Junior Swimming:
Diving was our focus this week. Swimmers began practicing with their seated dives, followed by kneeling and standing. As the Olympics are nearing, swimmers showed excitement to watch the diving competitions while they practiced diving with minimal splashes!  We also spent a lot of time strengthening our flutter, wedge and dolphin kicks. With the use of a noodle to hold our arms out, we worked on kicking with our whole body at the surface of the water. We had many laughs this week as each swimmer chose an animal to act as. They had to make their animal noise every time they came up to take a breath! You can only imagine what the pools sounded like!

KEEP SHYC SHIPSHAPE!

Help us keep the boats, docks, and Junior Room clean!  Please remind your kids to clean-up after themselves during class, lunch, and on the weekends.  If you see trash or stray gear, please pick it up and help out!!

Boat Removal & Swap!

Do you have a boat you would like to sell at the end of the season instead of taking it home?  Let the sailing instructors know, they would be happy to match you with someone looking for a boat to buy!

Last Day of Class = Thursday August 18th!

All classes end of Thursday August 18th. If you don't plan to keep sailing or racing after classes end, please start to collect all your gear and take it home.
