Sachem's Head Yacht Club - 2016

Junior Programs Newsletter - Week 2

The Sea Squirts had another great week! We continued reviewing the parts of the boat. They can rig an Opti by themselves now! We practiced tacking and had a paddle relay race. On Thursday we enjoyed a wonderful sail on a 38 foot Beneteau - the Squirts loved experiencing big boat sailing!

Opti 1 - Sailing

Opti I students are having loads of fun and  are learning so much. This week we worked on our tacks, determining the wind direction, steering, and learning safety position. On Thursday, we sailed on big boats.

Build Your Own Boat - Family Night
Our first "Bring Your Family Sailing" night was a huge success!  Thanks to Mandy Bonz for organizing such a fun night.  We had nearly 30 juniors take part in our "Build Your Own Boat" from recycled materials challenge and float-off.

Mark your calendars now for the next two Family Sailing nights.
  • Thursday, July 28, 5:30 pm: The second sailing night will be a Fun Race Night.
  • Thursday, August 4, 5:30 pm: The third sailing night will be a BOAT PARADE with costumes and decorated boats!
Junior Big Boat Day!
A special thank you to Rick Andrews (Beneteau 38) and Howard Tuttle (J109) for taking all our junior sailors out on their big-boats on Thursday July 7th!  Everyone had a blast!!

Opti 2 - Sailing

Opti 2 had a fun short week as they had 4th of July Monday off. Tuesday was a long sail around the Red Bell 22 and Wednesday lacked wind so we focused on 2 long chalk talks involving race courses and tactics for many of them who have a regatta this Friday the 8th but then had an adventure on the motorboat out to Outer Island. Thursday we went out on big-boats; thank you to the Tuttles and Andrews for their services!

420 - Sailing

This week in 420s we spent a lot of time working on boat handling and racing tactics. We learned how to roll tack, and continued to work on learning the fundamentals of team racing. On Thursday, the 420 group was invited onto members’ bigger boats where we learned about big boat basics. On Wed, the group had a race day in preparation of upcoming regattas. Tuesday we focused on boat handling. Overall the group has improved greatly and is looking forward to our first TeamRace clinic this coming Monday.

Afternoon - Adv Sailing Mariners
This week our afternoon Opti/Bic sailors worked on the rules of racing and role tacking. We also learned how to balance the boat in different wind speeds. We enjoyed watching sailing videos that showed detailed explanations of role tacking and team racing strategies. Last but not least, we sailed on big-boats around Long Island sound.

Junior Swimming:

Another productive week in swim class as we focused on strengthening our frog/wedge kick and breaststroke arms. Swimmers practiced kicks and arms individually, followed by putting the two together for a full breaststroke. We also worked on underwater swimming to increase the amount of time we can hole our breath underwater and practice gliding. Each week swimmers are increasing their time spent treading water as well!
