Junior Programs Newsletter - Mid Summer

SHYC Junior Regatta a Huge Success!
Our annual Junior Regatta was held on Friday July 22nd.  30 sailors competed, with sailors coming from all the local clubs - including 15 kids sailing for SHYC!   Top results from SHYC include: Henry Ginz 1st in White, Ike Schutz 3rd in White, and Wylder Smith 3rd in Green. Race Results Online: here

Special thanks to Katie Tuttle and Kerry Schutz for running the regatta this year.

On Saturday July 16th, Coach Casey held a practice race day for our Opti Green Team, to get everyone ready for the SHYC Regatta. Race practice was followed by a team debrief and ice-cream social!  The practice paid off, our Green Team had a very strong showing at our SHYC regatta. At the Pine Orchard Regatta, Opti Green Fleet had a great time. The conditions were tricky to sail in, but the Green Team pushed through.  Hayden, Wylder, Gus, and Eloise all sailed very well and the Green team had some top finishes.  Keep up the good work Green Team! You make your coaches so proud!

Opti 1 - Sailing

Opti I's are improving fast! Our Opti 1 sailors have quickly all mastered tacking, jibing, and sailing around a triangle. On one particularity windy day, we towed all the sailors to the inner harbor for some protected sailing under the bridge!   This week they worked on reading their telltales while sailing upwind. The coaches are very proud of this group and their hard work. Each sailor is now able to sail around a triangle course. Opti I's also had a ton of fun participating in the SHYC Olympic Day this week!

Race Team Action!

Junior Team Racing Olympics:  Our SHYC 420 Team-Racers sailed hard and finished in 3rd Place at the Junior Team Race Olympics held at Watch Hill Yacht Club!

Pine Orchard Regatta:
This past Sunday the Pine Orchard regatta looked more like a SHYC event as we seemed to outnumber their club. In the RWB Opti fleet, Henry Ginz and Simon Weekes turned out some impressive performances and finished 2nd and 3rd overall respectively. 12 year old Liv Streeter jumped in an Opti for the first time all year (as she has been practicing with 420s) and finished 1st in the blue fleet and 4th overall. Rounding out the SHYC fleet was Skylar Raymond and Nola Lai who both finished closely behind the leaders. Skylar has improved tremendously from last year and her ability to sail upwind is impressive; Nola made strong come backs all day and finished 4th in the final race!

SHYC Championship Perpetual Sailing Trophy Races – Saturday August 6th.
The club has two longstanding perpetual trophies for junior singlehanded and junior doublehanded sailing.

The Sea Squirts are doing terrific! They have been practicing sailing around the harbor with a buddy.  The highlight was on Thursday when the Squirts participated in the "SHYC Junior Sailing Olympics" with the Opti 1 & 2 sailors - events included rowing, paddling, "spriting", and more.  The Sea Squirts are making a lot of progress learning to sail independently.

Opti 2 - Sailing

Opti 2 continues to impress the coaches. Their improving at a remarkable pace and it's surprising to think the majority of them were green fleeters last year. In class they worked on starts and focusing on their sails when pointing upwind close-hauled. The image captures one day when it was blowing 15-20 knots and half the group went out and was able to hold their boats down and were psyched! This confidence is critical to young sailors development and really makes their coaches proud.

420 - Sailing

Our 420 sailors are working hard and learning lots - with a focus on racing, traps, chutes, and boat handling.

JR Tennis Key Upcoming Dates!

Junior Swimming:
Last week swimmers focused on swimming in their backs. We did a variety of activities to strengthen their ability to stay on the surface of the water while using the elementary back stroke and back stroke to swim across the pool. As we brought this session to an end we said goodbye to some of our swimmers and celebrate with games of their choice. We are excited to begin session two with some new swimmers as well as continue to strengthen previous skills that have been taught this summer.   As we began our second session of the summer this week, we welcomed some new swimmers and reviewed the techniques of our strokes and kicks. We did this through a variety of games such as the "Mr. Potato Head Race". Swimmers practiced their underwater swimming and diving while playing Beat You To 100.
