SHYC - Junior Regatta
Friday July 22nd!

Our annual Junior Regatta will be held on Friday July 22nd.  Last year we had nearly 50 sailors compete, with representative from all the local clubs -including more than 20 kids sailing for SHYC!  This regatta is open to all SHYC JR sailors, not just our Race Team.  Encourage your kids to try out racing, this is a great first regatta for new sailors.  All our instructors will be on-hand to help.  Fleets: Opti Green, Opti RBW, OpenBIC.

Opti 1 - Sailing

This week students mastered tacking and jibing by learning how to sail around a triangle. The instructors are very impressed with the improvements that the students have made so far! On Thursday, students partnered up with a sea squirt and taught them how to steer and turn the boat.

Race Team Action!

TeamRacing: Interclub team-racing started this monday on 7/11 with a team-race clinic at Niantic Bay Yacht Club.
Watch Hill Opti Regatta: Last week on 7/8 we had 8 sailors represent SHYC at the annual Watch Hill opti regatta.  Nearly 100 Optimist competed (98!).

Niantic Bay JR Olympics Regatta:  A strong SHYC Opti team of 5 went to the NBYC Junior Olympic Regatta on 7/14. Ike Schutz placed in Bronze in the White Fleet out of 14 white fleeters.  Spectacular overall top 3 finishes in individual races were had over the course of the regatta by Simon Weekes, Henry Ginz and Ike Schutz!  In one race, these three boys beat the entire 40 boat RWB fleet around the windward mark after having a fast pin end start!  Congrats SHYC Racers!

We also discussed wind direction and points of sail.

Junior Swimming:

In swim lessons this week, we added a little fun into our normal stroke practices! Our oldest group of swimmers has taken on their own version of the Olympic event, synchronized swimming! Swimmers are working in groups to choreograph their own routines set to music. Their routines must include the use of the freestyle, breast stroke and butterfly strokes, while also making their way from one end of the pool to the other. The groups have been practicing their routines this week and are set to perform next week! Our middle aged swimmers enjoyed a water basketball game this week. They found it challenging to tread water while passing the ball to their teammates and shooting the ball into the hoop. Some of our younger swimmers enjoyed playing some ring competitions. They utilized their math skills as they added points depending on the different values of each diving ring.

Opti 2 - Sailing

Opti 2 "aka Second Wave" had a spectacular week with some breakout performances from some of the club's youngest and most talented sailors. They are learning how to sail downwind with the centerboard raised and heeling the boat. They're making tight mark roundings and sailing fast upwind; some are even rolling their boats so hard they have fallen into the water!
Afternoon - Adv Sailing Mariners.
This week the our advanced opti/Bic sailors enjoyed practicing the details reading puffs and strong currents. They also got to sail with instructors in 420's using the spinnaker. On Wednesday, the Opti/BIC kids raced in a 420 against the Madison Beach Club - with 8 420s out sailing!

We STILL NEED more Parent of the Day Volunteers for Sailing!!
