Sachem's Head Yacht Club - 2016

Junior Programs Newsletter - Week 1

Weekly Words from SHYC's Head Sailing Instructor - Teddy!
This first week at SHYC has been amazing! The kids picked up their sailing skills right where they left off.  Our strong team of new sailing instructors are bringing new ideas, fun and excitement to everyone's sailing.  Most importantly the kids are having fun and learning. This summer is going to be great!

Race Team Kick-Off!

Thanks to Kerry Schutz for hosting our first ever official Race Team Kick-Off this week .  Our race team kids - Green Team, Opti Team, and Team Racers all gathered with their parents and our team coaches to learn about all the great regattas the sailors will be attending.  We also went over roles & responsibilities, travel team expectations, and more.  All the sailors received their cool gear bags, race team shirts, and snazzy race team "pinnies"!

The Sea Squirts had a great week! We learned about the parts of the boat, how to rig an Opti, and wind direction. They started off being towed on a Opti behind a powerboat to practice steering and become more comfortable in the boat. On Thursday, each Sea Squirt got paired up with a buddy from Opti 2 and we had a great day of adventure sailing!    Our new Squirt Snack program is a big hit - but please don't forget to label your child's snack with their name!

We need more Sea-Squirt optimists: if you have an Opti for your sailor, please bring it down to the club as soon as you can.  As a reminder, all second year squirts should have an Optimist.

Opti 1 - Adventure Learners

Opti I students had an awesome and fun week!  They worked on sailing around marks, tacking using proper hand switches, capsize recovery, and docking!  On Tuesday, Teddy hopped into an Opti with each student to help them practice sailing.

Afternoon Advanced Opti / BIC
Our group of 7 brave sailors started off last week with a swim test, name game and sailing! This week we worked on the rules of the road, team racing, and fleet racing.  The sailors also practiced sailing the new course, called a "Digital N."

We NEED Parent of the Day Volunteers for Sailing!!

Have you signed up yet?  We need all parents (and/or grandparents) with sailors to sign up for a 1/2 day slot per sailor in the program.

420 Sailing
Our fantastic 420 sailors have started off strong and have already shaken off the dust from winter break. So far, we have learned the basics of team racing and trying to get good starts - being on-time and on-the-line. On flexible Friday, multiple sailors got out on the Trappeze - look at that form!

Opti 2 Sailing

Opti 2 is a strong group of sailors that were roll tacking, tying bowlines and racing by the end of the week. So proud of this strong group of sailors which is representative of the bright future this JR Sailing program has created. Here is a tow line where all the sailors tied bowlines to link up but there was one capsize on the line!

Junior Swimming:

It was a great first full week of swim class! We had fun welcoming new swimmers and noticing how much everyone grew over the year. Our focus this week was on water safety as we reminded swimmers how to float multiple ways and tread water when they are tired. We also spent the week working on powerful flutter kicks while using kick boards. We are looking forward to another great summer swim season!

Rules, Trash, and Safety!

Lunch Hour: Please make sure your kids are supervised during the lunch hour and clean-up after themselves at all times.
Trash: If you see trash, please throw it in the garbage (even if it is not yours!).
Stray Gear: If you see wet towels, spare gear, boat parts, and/or clothing cluttering the docks or Junior Room, please remind your sailors to help by picking things up.  Together we can keep SHYC ship-shape!
