State digitalization program to be launched in 2019

The Information and Communications Policy Council, established in 2017 by Prime Minister U. Khurelsukh, held a consultative meeting with representatives from state organizations, banking and financial institutions, and telecommunication companies to discuss the 2019 launch of its program to create an online database for state services. The program will promote online public services, create opportunities for offering one-stop service centers for citizens, and support public-private partnerships with IT companies.  Chief of the Cabinet Secretariat G. Zandanshatar, who chaired the meeting, stated, “This project, which will be launched on  January 1, 2019, will look for technological opportunities to improve access to public services by creating opportunities for citizens to obtain essential state data online by simply downloading information, official documents,  and letters with smart phones. In addition, yesterday, together with the ADB, we launched a project to establish a central database where all data and information for the state's ministries will be collected and compiled.”

Current economic conditions and trends discussed during BoM forum

Summary: The Bank of Mongolia and the Economic Research and Science Institute organized a discussion of current economic conditions and trends to address issues related to Mongolia's economic growth, mining, and investment. The discussion was held with two panel presentations.  Representatives from research institutions noted that the current economic crisis has been caused largely by poor  political policies and uncertainty rather than being directly affected by economic factors. Some panelists suggested that Mongolia's unstable business environment, which is dependent on political conditions and impacted by personal factors, makes prospective investors cautious about directly investing. Attendees highlighted that the inaction of decision-makers, even in the event of technical and financial resources being made available, hinders investment opportunities. It was also stated that based on observations made from other investment meetings and conferences, investors tend to be interested in investing in other sectors instead of being limited only to mining.

Trump fires Rex Tillerson as secretary of state

Donald Trump fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and has  nominated Director of the CIA Mike Pompeo to fill the position.  President  Trump stated, “I have gotten to know Mike very well over the past 14 months, and I am confident he is the right person for the job at this critical juncture.” President Trump did not explain why he fired Rex Tillerson, but he has mentioned having contradictory views on Iran and other foreign policy issues. In his last speech as secretary of state, Rex Tillerson addressed the State Department rather than Donald Trump. Observers say that the president’s decision was not a sudden one. International Crisis Group analyst Stephen Pomper said he was not surprised by the decision, as there were rumors about the firing emerging. Pomper noted that the State Department needs strong leadership in light of developments between the USA and North Korea.
