Deputy Prime Minister meets UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres


On July 18, Deputy Prime Minister U. Enkhtuvshin met with Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) Antonio Guterres to exchange views about cooperation between Mongolia and the UN. Deputy Prime Minister U. Enkhtuvshin thanked Guterres for the UN’s wide-ranging support for Mongolia. He added that the Mongolian government is willing to increase the provision of Mongolian military personnel for the UN’s peacekeeping activities. Secretary-General Guterres specifically expressed appreciation for Mongolia’s contribution to maintaining peace on the Korean Peninsula and affirmed that the UN will enhance its cooperation with Mongolia in all forms.

530 households affected by flooding in Bayan-Ulgii Province


Due to heavy rainfall from July 14 through 16, in Ulgii soum of Bayan-Ulgii Province, 2,512 people from 530 households have been affected by flooding in the region. The National Emergency Management Agency reported that 1,566 residents have been removed from dangerous areas, 668 people have been provided with temporary shelters, and 58 households have been relocated so far. Currently, a total of 618 relief workers, including volunteers and residents, are working in Ulgii soum. According to a preliminary report, the total amount of damage caused by flooding is projected to be five times the damage from flooding in July 2016.

NSO releases social and economic data for the first half of 2018


On July 18, the National Statistical Office (NSO) released its Social and Economic Situation of Mongolia report on the first half of 2018. According to the report, the inflation rate reached 7.2 percent, mainly due to price hikes for vegetables, dairy products, and petroleum products. The money supply rose by 3.9 trillion MNT when compared to 2017, bringing the total amount to 17.3 trillion MNT. Outstanding loans at commercial banks amounted to 15.4 trillion MNT as of June 2018, an increase of 2.5 trillion MNT year over year. The amount of non-performing loans went up by 184 billion MNT to 1.3 trillion MNT. In the first six months of 2018, foreign trade turnover stood at 6.3 billion USD with a net surplus of 822.2 million USD, reflecting a decline of 1.2 billion USD from the same period in 2017. The state budget saw a surplus of 12.9 billion MNT in the first six months of 2018.

86 percent of active entities in Mongolia have up to 9 employees  


According to the National Statistical Office’s Social and Economic Situation report, a total of 163,000 entities were registered in the Statistical Business Register as of February 2018. Currently, 50.9 percent (83,100) of all registered entities are  operational, thus classified as active enterprises. Out of these active entities, 85.9 percent employ up to nine people, while three percent have more than 50 employees.
