Cabinet allocates 390 million MNT for by-election and re-election costs


During its regular session on August 15, Cabinet approved the allocation of 390 million MNT for holding Parliament’s by-election for the 42nd constituency in Khentii Province, as well as the Citizens’ Representative Khural by-elections and re-elections in the provinces. Parliament set election administrative budgets in June and asked Cabinet to provide funding from the Government Reserve Fund. Roughly 228.1 million MNT of the total amount allocated will be spent on organizing the parliamentary by-election in Khentii Province, while the remainder will be spent on other by-elections and re-elections.

Speaker meets with Minister of Home Affairs of Laos


On August 15, Speaker of Parliament M.Enkhbold received Minister of Home Affairs of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic Khammanh Sounvileuth. During the meeting, the Speaker stressed the importance of strengthening economic collaboration and stated that it is possible to import meat and meat products from Mongolia. Minister Sounvileuth noted that representatives from Laos are visiting Mongolia to exchange technical expertise with government organizations and to expand bilateral relations. An inter-governmental commission meeting in Ulaanbaatar is scheduled to take place in November.

Mongolia’s GDP growth hits a four-year high of 6.3 percent


The National Statistical Office reported that Mongolia’s GDP growth stood at 6.3 percent – the highest growth since 2014 - in the first half of 2018, reaching 8 trillion MNT in constant 2010 prices. The growth was mainly driven by a service sector surge of 184.9 billion MNT and a net taxes increase for products of 192.1 billion MNT. As of July, the state budget has seen a surplus of 291 billion USD. A tax revenue increase of 33 percent was a main driver in generating the surplus. The state's money supply went up by 3.2 trillion MNT, totaling 17.2 trillion MNT.

U.S. President announces a nominee for Ambassador to Mongolia


On August 13, U.S. President Donald J. Trump announced his nominees for key positions in his administration. Mr. Michael S. Klecheski was nominated to serve as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Mongolia. He is currently Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in the Philippines. Mr. Klecheski has also held diplomatic positions at the U.S. embassies in Kazakhstan, Russia, Iraq, Switzerland, and Poland.
