Tavan Tolgoi project acceleration to be discussed by Parliament


During its regular session on June 20, Cabinet discussed accelerating activities at the Tavan Tolgoi mine. The government plans to carry out several measures to establish additional infrastructure at the coal mine to increase its economic benefits. Part of the plan includes trading up to 30 percent of the project's shares on the Mongolian Stock Exchange and in the international market in order to raise capital. Cabinet intends to immediately commence the construction of paved roads for Tavan Tolgoi-Gashuunsukhait, Tavan Tolgoi-Zuunbayan, Tavan Tolgoi-Oyu Tolgoi-Khangi routes,  and to build Tavan Tolgoi-Gashuunsukhait and Tavan Tolgoi-Zuunbayan railway routes as well. The Mongolian People’s Party Caucus in Parliament and the National Security Council of Mongolia have supported Cabinet’s plan for the intensification of Tavan Tolgoi activities, and Cabinet is working to soon submit their plan to Parliament.​

Bylaws of the Assistance Fund for Mongolian citizens living abroad revised


On June 20, Cabinet approved revisions to the bylaws of the Assistance Fund for Mongolian citizens living abroad and the appointment of the fund’s board members. The revisions will provide a regulatory framework for the management of  translation costs associated with mutual legal assistance treaties held with other countries.

According to official data, more than 150,000 Mongolian citizens live abroad, and the number of criminal activities involving Mongolians, as victims and perpetrators, has been increasing. From 2009 to 2017, the Assistance Fund provided 1.3 billion MNT in financial support to Mongolian citizens living abroad, provided by through diplomatic missions in foreign countries.

Single-use plastic bags to be banned in 2019


During its regular session on June 20, Cabinet issued an order to prohibit the sale and distribution of single-use plastic bags starting in March 2019. Plastic bags are considered to be harmful to the environment. According to officials, Cabinet made the decision a year in advance in order to give the public and importers of plastic bags time to prepare for the ban.​

Ambassador L. Purevsuren presents letter of credence to the President of the Swiss Confederation


On June 19, Mongolian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary L. Purevsuren presented his letter of credence to President of the Swiss Confederation Alain Berset. After the presentation ceremony, President Berset received Ambassador Purevsuren and congratulated him on his appointment. During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on maintaining the frequency of state visits and organizing consultative meetings for the Swiss and Mongolian ministers of foreign affairs. Mongolia established diplomatic relations with Switzerland in 1964. Within the scope of bilateral development cooperation, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation will be implementing projects in Mongolian in three main areas through 2021: agriculture and food safety, technical and vocational training, and good governance.         ​
