Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, that’s Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG11). Cities are hubs for ideas, commerce, culture, science, productivity, social development and much more. At their best, cities have enabled people to advance socially and economically. But there are also many challenges, especially in developing countries. The proportion of the urban population that lives in developing country slums continues to grow, owing in part to accelerating urbanization, population growth and lack of appropriate land and housing policies. The future now


Cities today are growing at a pace that none of us have ever understood. Currently 54% of the world population is living in cities and that will grow to 70% in 2050. What will future cities look like and what do we want sustainable, healthy, liveable and inclusive cities to look like? What is the future of cities? Urban garden route in Seoul


The Dutch firm MVRDV transformed a former highway in Seoul into an elevated urban garden. The project, named Seoullo 7017, is a kilometre-long path featuring 24,000 trees, shrubs and flowers set into cylindrical planters. The pedestrian-only route extends across several lanes of traffic to connect Seoul Station and Namdaemun Market with the city's Mall-dong, Jungnim-dong and Cheongpa-dong neighbourhoods.

Social cable-cars in Medellin


Once notorious for its drug cartels, the city of Medellín, Colombia, is now celebrated for fostering social inclusion in its public transport infrastructure. The residents of the Comuna district can now scale the hill side in 6 minutes via a giant outdoor escalator. Electric trams and cable-cars are connecting other poor neighborhoods to the city centre. Other Latin American Cities are following Medillin’s example.

Self-built homes in Malaysia


The Orang Asli are the indigenous people and the oldest inhabitants of Malaysia. Owning a home is difficult as most of them are living in poverty. The EPIC Homes programme is designed to develop self-built homes and support networks by bringing together rural and urban folk through the act of building homes, leading to the development of cooperative, resilient and sustainable communities.

Climate change in Montego Bay, Jamaica


Many cities have not yet addressed climate change. The reasons include a lack of relevant city policies and action plans; existence of regulations on urban planning and environment which have not been adjusted to manage climate change; slow response to climate disasters due to lack of capacity and resources; and lack of public awareness on climate variability and climate change-induced hazard mitigation. People in Montego Bay, Jamaica are changing this situation.
