Advocacy Committee Update

House of Delegates Update

Doris Montgomery, Iowa Affiliate Delegate

I have a confession. When I accepted the Board’s invitation to represent Iowa in the House of Delegates, I didn’t have a crystal clear understanding about its purpose. So, I want to share what I learned!

The important phrase in this statement is, “as the voice of members.”  To be an effective delegate, I need to hear from you. Often.

  1. Respond to short surveys sent via email blasts to IAND members. They should take just a few minutes of your time.
  2. Volunteer to be a member of a rapid response team. Sometimes I need quick feedback on an issue or proposal that isn’t ready for prime time.
If you’re willing to be a member of this team, let me know!
  3. The work of the House of Delegates can be found on the Academy website.
  4. Look for monthly updates on HOD issues in this newsletter throughout 2020.

Happy New Year!

Nominations Committee Update

IAND provides members with loads of benefits including inspiring CPE activities, opportunities to advocate at the state and national level for quality nutrition care for our clients and patients, and professional networking activities throughout the year.

Never has it been more important for each of us to give back to the organization to ensure registered dietitians continue to be recognized as the nutrition expert.

Serving on the IAND Board & Council is a great way to get involved with other RD’s who are passionate about nutrition and promoting the registered dietitian as the nutrition expert.

As a volunteer serving on the Board & Council, you have the opportunity to:

  • Earn CPE hours for leadership.
  • Steer the mission and vision of IAND.
  • Strengthen professional recognition by peers and employers.
  • Increase your knowledge about dietetics outside of your current practice area.
  • Network with peers.

And it is not a heavy lift!  A virtual Board & Council meeting is held monthly so you can attend from any location.  The hours you put in between meetings will depend on the position that you hold and the goals that you have set.

Think you might be interested?  The election will be held in early 2020 and the Nominating Committee continues to search for dietitians interested in running for the following positions:

  • President-Elect
  • Meeting Chair – Elect
  • Council on Professional Issues Chair – Elect
  • Nominating Committee Member

If you’d like to learn more about this opportunity, contact one of the nominating committee members for details.  And if you aren’t quite ready to serve on the Board & Council, consider volunteering in another capacity such as assisting with the annual meeting or become a media representative.

Don't forget to check the "Member Opportunities" section of the IAND website! We are frequently updating with new, fun and interesting opportunities for our local Iowa dietitians.
Annual Membership Survey
Please take time to complete the annual membership survey online at the following link:

It should take five minutes or less. All members and non-members of the Iowa Academy are encouraged to complete the survey. Responses are very useful in planning future Iowa Academy activities and endeavors.

Don’t miss out on this chance to share your valued opinions with the Iowa Academy! If you have any questions regarding the survey, please contact Steph Brimeyer at
It is time once again for members to indicate their interest in volunteering on national committees.

The “Opportunities to Serve” survey
is now available online at:
Individuals interested in volunteering to serve must complete this survey by January 16, 2020.  A description of each committee is available via a link in the “Opportunities to Serve” survey. Members already appointed to serve on an Academy committee for 2020-2021 do not need to complete the Opportunities to Serve Survey. Instead, we ask that you share this information with colleagues who may be interested in volunteering on an Academy committee or that you would like to encourage to do so. Also, if you are completing your term of service on the Board of Directors and wish to be considered for one of these positions, please complete the survey.
The information provided when completing this survey will be critical to Linda and Lauri as they make appointments for the various Academy committees for the 2020-2021 program year. Although we cannot ensure that everyone who completes the survey will be selected to serve, every effort will be made to consider their unique talents during the appointment process.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the survey, please contact me at or 1-800-877-1600 ext. 1762. Thank you for helping to identify individuals for consideration for these important appointments.
Best regards,
Marsha Schofield, MS, RD, LD, FAND
The Eating Disorder Coalition of Iowa (EDCI) will be hosting our 3rd annual EDCI Professional Eating Disorder Event on February 21st to kick off Eating Disorder Awareness Week events that follow in Iowa.

Each year the event has grown!  In 2019, we were able to expand to have a Legacy Dinner, honoring professionals who have contributed so much to the growth of eating disorders treatment in the state of Iowa.

Also, we were able to offer continuing medical education credits and build the professional eating disorder communities by hosting four virtual locations in addition to the Des Moines host site.

This year we will be adding a public opportunity the morning after the professional event with featured speaker Kara Richardson Whitely, author of “Gorge”. It’s going to be a great week of learning and raising awareness about eating disorders. Mark your calendar now and plan to attend the Professional Event on February 21st. Continuing education credits for registered dietitians will be available.
