Camoin 310 stands in solidarity with the Black community in the fight against systemic racism.
The sadness, anger, and frustration that the Camoin team and I are feeling over the unjust deaths of black Americans like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and many others is crushing. What happened to these individuals, to so many others before them, and to minority populations across this country, is wrong. These events have made it painfully clear that overcoming deeply entrenched issues of race and racism will require all of us to not just speak out, but to act.
It has been encouraging to see so many business and political leaders increasing their call for change. While many also committed to significant donations to very worthy causes and initiatives, I was struck by how few offered actions they or their organization would be taking to become part of a systematic solution to eliminate racism and inequity.
With those observations in mind, we at Camoin 310 are recognizing that we need to do more. Last week I challenged our team to take time and think about what we can do as a small company to not only offer solutions in our economic development work; but, more importantly, what we can do internally to create the partnerships and environment that ensure greater resources and opportunity for all.
To begin, we will listen more to those that have already made this social issue a priority and spend time educating ourselves and each other. In doing this, we hope to create space to have more meaningful conversations about diversity, inclusivity, and equity. Each fall for the last 21 years, Camoin has developed a 12-month strategic plan. As part of the exercise this year, and in the years to come, we will be dedicating time and discussion leading to the adoption of actions to help catalyze change internally, as well as bring economic equity to the forefront of our projects. Like the other actions we develop, roles and responsibilities will be assigned, and accomplishment metrics established.
While the recent outpouring of support and attention is encouraging, we at Camoin are recognizing we can no longer sit idle. We encourage our economic development community to join us in this fight and look forward to learning about the steps you are taking, sharing the actions and initiatives we have identified, and moving forward together to affect permanent change.
