Dear Citizens,

The Board of Supervisors held a public hearing at their February 21st meeting to receive comments about the proposed transfer of 20 acres of land in the Shirley T Holland Intermodal Park to the Commonwealth of Virginia for the purpose of constructing a new Juvenile Justice Facility for the Hampton Roads area.  After hearing from more than 40 speakers, the Board of Supervisors voted to authorize conveyance of the property to the Commonwealth subject to agreeing to terms on the transfer of the property. We have begun negotiations with the relevant departments at the State level and will be presenting options for the Board to consider at their Work Session on March 7th and the regular meeting on March 21st. The Board is also planning a trip to the current Juvenile Detention Center in Bon Air to tour the facility and talk to the staff about the security measures in place at that facility.

The County held a ribbon-cutting for Phase 1 of the long-awaited Nike Park Trail on February 28th.  This phase of the trail connects S. Church St. with Nike Park Rd. and all the neighborhoods along that section of Battery Park Rd.  We look forward to completion of the remaining portion of the trail in the next year. In the meantime, we hope that residents will enjoy this initial phase especially as the weather gets warmer.

The County’s annual budget preparation is well underway with departments and agencies submitting their budget requests for consideration.  I plan to present the proposed budget to the Board of Supervisors at their Work Session on April 4th.

Sincerely,

Randy R. Keaton, County Administrator
Isle of Wight County Virginia
