Upcoming Board of Supervisor Meetings:
December 13, 3:00 PM, Board of Supervisors Work Session
December 13, 5:00 PM, Board of Supervisors Meeting
November 2018

The new E911 system is finally nearing the finish line.  We will begin coverage testing on Monday, December 3rd and it is expected to last two weeks.  County staff and volunteers will be travelling throughout the County testing the new radios to ensure that the system works as promised in every area of the County.  We will begin transitioning over to the new system in phases beginning with the Smithfield Police Department.  Tentatively, the 911 staff plan to move to their new center the week of December 18th.  We look forward to completing this much needed radio system project which will greatly benefit our first responders and citizens.

County staff along with State representatives and our consultant, Kimley-Horn met with the Army Corps of Engineers this week to begin work on finalizing a proposed location for the Juvenile Justice facility that has been planned for Phase III of the Shirley T. Holland Intermodal Park.  A representative from the Corps of Engineers will be conducting a site visit next week to verify the limits of the wetlands.  We expect a written determination within a few weeks which will allow us to begin preparing an actual survey and description of the site.  We are also working to schedule a public meeting to show the proposed site, describe the project and proposed facility in more detail, and answer questions from the public.

The most significant news financially for the County this week was our successful defense of a Machinery & Tools tax lawsuit that had been filed by International Paper.  After a 3-day trial in Isle of Wight Circuit Court, the lawsuit was dismissed in the County’s favor.

VACO Best Small County Achievement Award

IW County was awarded "Best Small County (population less than 50,000) Achievement Award" at Virginia Association of Counties last night.

Award was for "Using GIS to Improve Erosion and Sedimentation Control Inspection Program Efficiency"

Award Detail:Working together, the Isle of Wight County Stormwater Management and Geographic Information System (GIS) Offices developed a more accurate and efficient way of determining when erosion and sedimentation inspections are needed at individual construction sites. Using National Weather Service rainfall data and specialized software, staff produced mapping products that pin-pointed only those sites receiving enough rainfall to require inspection.

Additionally, the new process is much less likely to overlook isolated pockets of heavy rainfall that might otherwise go unreported. The new process keeps our operational costs low, has been in place for over a year and takes a technician 15-20 minutes to complete.
