November Newsletter

October has come and gone and winter has once again arrived in Alaska.  It's hard to believe that 2020 is almost over, I think this has been both the fastest and slowest year I ever remember.

Over the weekend of Oct.16th more than 25 people participated in our second annual AK Dev Alliance hAKathon.  We would like to thank our Hackathon participants for taking time out of their weekend to spend it with us. Shout out to our top 3 winners Fill Mate, Concave and Keyperi! Along with our special mention for "Community Outreach" Baked Blessings and special mention for "Commercial Possibilities" Telesomm. Hope to see you all next year.

We owe a special thanks to Arsh and Vincent for leading the charge in getting this year's hAKathon organized.  These sorts of events take countless hours of behind the scenes work to pull off.

As we wrap up this year we will be sending out our annual Dev Alliance survey on November 15th.  Last year we had ~40% participation and this year we are looking to try reach our goal of 50% by Dec. 15th.  To help promote participation we have two new incentives:
  • For those of you who have been passionately involved in the Slack vs. Discord debate, this will be your chance to have you preferences heard.  There will be specific questions relating to this which will help inform this decision.
  • Prizes, prizes, prizes.  Each week every person who has completed the survey will have a chance to win a prize.  This means if you complete it on Nov 15th you'll have 4 chances to win.
This month we have a few announcements.

Ladies Please!

We all know that women are an underrepresented group in tech, but together we can be stronger. The  channel in Slack was created as a way for women in the industry as well as students to start building an Alaskan community.  If you would like to discuss tech, career development and possible outreach to future generations of women developers please join!  We'll arrange virtual coffee chats for those interested for the winter months and hopefully some in person meetings at a later date when it is safe to do so.

Finally,  November will be our final monthly meetup for the year.  We will start back again in January 2021 but let's make this meetup our most attended and end this crazy year on a high note.

Meetup Topic

Our speaker this month will be Dave Nespoli.  We are still finalizing the details on the talk topic but it will be on his music teaching software startup.  Stay tuned for more details.
We will be hosting a virtual meetup with a conference call as well as live streams.  Both options information are here:
