Although it’s been a short week, it’s certainly been a busy one. Here are some highlights:
Parent Teacher Conferences
These were well attended and once again show the wonderful partnership that we form to support learning for our students. Here’s an example of some parents co-constructing our learner profile posters at our conferences.
PSA Book Fair
Although the space for the book fair is limited, the PSA have a system that seems to entice and excite students as well as draw the parents into purchasing books for their children. The range of books was exceptional and we’re grateful to the PSA for their efforts in making the event a grand success. Thanks for the trolley bags too!
After School Activities
Our comprehensive after school activities started this week and although the rain challenged some of our offering’s, we were able to persevere in providing memorable experiences for our students.
Connecting with the IB community
You’ll notice from time to time that your child’s teachers are not in school. As an IB school, we work with the IB regional office based in Singapore as well as other schools to develop our understanding of the Primary Years Programme. Additionally, we are called upon to share our expertise through offering training at conferences and at other schools.
This weekend, our Assistant Principal Ms. Cedo is leading a workshop about “Leading early years in PYP schools”. Ms Cheung has been selected to train to be a workshop leader as well as a school visitor, this means that very soon she will deliver workshops and be in a position to authorize and evaluate other PYP schools. Ms. Kuemmerlin has been attending a PYP workshop about ‘Leading the Learning’ which is specifically tailored for school administration
Our Grade 5 team is learning more about the PYP Exhibition to better serve their students through the process this year.
This week we had three different parent PL’s on offer. Parents learned about what it means to approach conversations with a growth mindset as well as what their child’s MAP scores mean. New parents developed their understanding of transitioning and what this looks and feels like for the family. In our book group Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, Daniel Pink (and Mrs. Kuemmerlin) explores and explains how having mastery, purpose, and autonomy lead to true motivation.
Student Council (STUCO)
We are grateful to all those that expressed an interest and applied to STUCO. After lots of deliberation, some difficult decisions had to be made and the following students will represent the Primary STUCO for the 2019/20 school year.
4A Simon & Liwu
4B Marlee & Maddie
4C William & Jocelyn
5A Alissa & Bianca
5D Asta & Eric
4B Aidan and 5D Dorothy will take on a new role of being Grade level representatives as well as supporting Grade 2 student meetings.
This week’s UP assembly was led by 2C and 4B. The students demonstrated and explained what the IB Learner Profile means. I’ve asked each student to pick one of the Learner Profile attributes to focus on over the weekend. See if you notice which one it is.
Our PK2E researchers joined the UP assembly to learn more about routines and expectations. We hope they left with some answers and many more questions!
This week’s Golden Sneaker was awarded to 5A for showing responsibility. The next Golden Sneaker will be awarded to the class that shows effective communication skills.

Our SIS Grade 4/5 Basketball Team has their first tournament of the season tomorrow! They will be playing several games against other international schools from Shenzhen. The tournament will be held from 9:00-12:00 at Shekou Sports Center:
