Mr. Sheppard, Learning Innovation Coach and Ms. DeCardy, Director of Level 5 introduced the annual Nanshan Maker Faire to primary students. This is an authentic opportunity to showcase our students creativity to the wider community. We can’t wait to see what children create! The community event will be hosted by the Design Society on November 16th. For more information please contact Mr Sheppard (email@example.com) or Ms DeCardy (firstname.lastname@example.org).
On Tuesday parents filled Level 5 to learn more about Maths at SIS. Our students learn math through an inquiry approach that is differentiated to allow all students to access the curriculum. SIS teachers are highly trained and invite our students to develop their skills and math practices. Using the math practice standards, teachers challenge students to make sense of the problem, construct arguments that explains thinking, and to model their thinking in a variety of ways as well as persevere when solving Maths problems. Through learning Maths at SIS, students gain self-management, communication and thinking skills. You can view a PDF version of the presentation here (What Maths Looks Like at Primary School).
The Primary School Sports season is underway for our Gecko student-athletes! SIS competes in the Shenzhen International Schools Athletic Conference (SISAC) against other international schools from around Shenzhen. The Grade 4-5 Basketball team had their first tryout on Tuesday, led by Coach Kuemmerlin and Coach Middleton. They are preparing themselves for two tournaments this year: September 21 and November 2, both hosted by BASIS. Next week our Grades 3-4-5 Swim Team will start training with their coaches: Coach Porter, Coach Barwicki, and Coach Genard. These swimming Geckos will be preparing for three swim meets this year: October 26 at SWIS, November 23 at SWIS, and November 30 at BSG. Later on this year we will have Soccer, Track and Field, and Badminton as part of our Primary Sports Program.
Guest Speakers from Inspire Citizens, Steve Sostak, Aaron Moniz, and Kavita Tanna, an organization promoting the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) spent a morning with Grades 2-5. The topics covered all connected to our current UOIs about personal identity and the things we value. Students learned what it means to take action in order to contribute to their communities and came up with many examples of the actions they can take now.
Our Geckos are starting to explore our outdoor water play materials. At SIS we believe in the opportunities that the outdoors brings to our children’s learning and growth. During the weekends, continue to increase you children’s awareness of nature and the outdoor environment.
To celebrate China's mid-autumn festival, our Geckos including their peers from the French Bilingual Program are making flower lanterns in Mandarin classes. This event is also known as Moon Festival so you will see moon cakes being given to friends and families. This is a popular family celebration in China, so you might see families get together over the long weekend and enjoy their time together. 中秋快乐！ At this time of the year, Korean families also celebrate their thanksgiving festival. Have a wonderful Chuseok. 추석잘지내새요
