Dear SIS Community

This is a special week in the history of China. Celebrating 70 years is a major milestone. I was fortunate to be in Beijing for the 60th anniversary and was part of the parade through the city to Tiananmen Square. It was a very special memory. I felt the full weight of history and the importance of celebrating achievement on display during that parade. I wish everyone a wonderful National Day break and invite you to take a moment to reflect on achievement.

Just like the nation, we all deserve to take a few minutes on regular occasions to celebrate success and enjoy the benefits that we have earned. Just as China has achieved so much over the last 70 years thanks to the efforts of many people, so does each one of us need the support and assistance of others to be successful.

I invite each family to celebrate this National Day by noting the successes of the family. We have such an amazing collection of families in our school. Each family has a unique set of successes. Please take the time to talk about all of the things that you value about your child, and the relationships that you have. Research shows that children grow stronger and achieve more when their parents talk to them about success and show interest in their activities. Every conversation that a family has about what a child learns can make a difference. Any time that parents celebrate some new skill helps a child to learn their next new skill.

Please be safe over this holiday, and return to SIS refreshed and ready for more exciting learning.

Best regards

Greg Smith
Head of School

Several Bayside high school students signed up to participate in a coding working at Level 5 this past week. Level 5 and SIS partnered with LeWagon-Shenzhen to teach students how to build a WeChat Mini-Program from scratch. Students entered the workshop with varied experiences with coding, but all walked out with a completed We-Chat artifact by applying HTML, CSS, and Java. Our next partnerships with LeWagon will be open to our greater community after the October holiday! Stay tuned for future workshop dates in October.
