Issue 9

Dear Parents,

We’re enjoying the cooler weather and it means that we have more opportunity to use our outdoor spaces. On that note, check out these large new play materials that our students have been using. If you look carefully, you can see students working together, communicating, problem solving, designing, evaluating and adjusting!

Learning Comes Alive N-PK2
Thank you to all the families that attended our LCA event on Thursday. This is an opportunity for parents and caregivers to see how their children have adjusted to school since the beginning of the school year, what are our children curious about, and what materials  they enjoy playing with. LCA is a snapshot of a day in our early years’ classrooms.

First Aid
The safety of students, staff, and all members of our community is of utmost importance to us so SIS staff are required to complete CPR/First Aid training. Mr. Elliott is an Emergency First Response Instructor Trainer and has spent 2 days this week training 12 teachers and teaching assistants to become CPR/First Aid Instructors. They will then teach Emergency First Response courses to the rest of the SIS faculty and staff. There may be opportunities in the future for other SIS community members to receive training as well. The new EFR Trainers are: Ms. Dani, Ms. Denson, Mr. Denson, Ms. Durham, Mr. Knight, Ms. Lill, Ms. Judy, Mr. Myers, Mr. Porter, Ms. Beryl , Ms. Yang, and Ms. Isabella.

Fall Classical Recital
Each year, many of our students are given the opportunity to perform to an audience as part of our classical recital series.  This serves to acknowledge student commitment to learning an instrument as well as continues to place value on the importance of music in our lives.

Parent Learning EDU
As well as teaching your children, we continue to have many opportunities to support our parents. It’s only October and we’ve had at least eight sessions this year! This week our school counsellors led a parent session about protecting children online and overseas.  They discussed the need for appropriate supervision, awareness of the games that children are playing online, and some simple prevention strategies for protecting children.  All are welcome to come to the next parent workshop on October 16 about the essentials of parenting.

PSA Halloween
The PSA is co-ordinating events for our students to participate in on Thursday 31st Oct. Each student will have the opportunity to take part in developmentally appropriate activities as well as be part of a costume parade. More details will be shared soon.
Come visit the SIS Bayside Haunted House tonight...if you dare!!!

This week’s EP assembly was led by KD together with the help of ‘Miller’. Students helped us understand the importance of being safe, empathetic, responsible and respectful. Short skits modelled the kind of behaviours we expect to see with all our students.
