“a balanced appraisal”
from the Preface, Churchill, A Life
870 words / 4 minute read
It is my aim in these pages to give a full and rounded picture of Churchill's life, both in its personal and political aspects.  His career has been the subject of countless books and essays, in which he has sometimes been cavalierly, sometimes harshly, judged.  I have sought to give a balanced appraisal, based on his actual thoughts, actions, achievements and beliefs, as opposed to the many misconceptions that exist.
The record of Churchill's life is a particularly full one, for which a vast mass of contemporary material survives.  It is therefore possible, for almost every incident in which he was involved, to present his own words and arguments, his thinking, his true intentions, and his precise actions.

850 word count / 4 minute read
In August 2013 I was invited by the Churchill Centre to attend the dedication of an Oscar Nemon bust of Winston Churchill at the Capitol building in Washington.  After the ceremonies, I decided to take some time to wander through the Capitol, a girl who had grown up in the wilds of Idaho, who had done all her formal education in the States, finally visiting that bastion of Democracy in “Our Nation's Capitol”.  I had been to Washington with Martin, even to George W. Bush's White House when Martin spoke to his senior staff on Churchill's war leadership (published here); I had never been inside the Capitol building.
I wandered, I looked, I soaked it all up; I even got the attention of more than one watchful security guard who asked if I was alright.

Sir Martin's book The Boys
From Helen McCord, Senior Teaching Fellow,
the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education:

At the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education we are working with the author Tom Palmer to produce free lesson materials and resources to support teachers using his novel ‘After the War’ with their students. ‘After the War’ is a carefully researched historical novel, based upon the testimonies and experiences of ‘The Boys’, the child survivors of the Holocaust who were sent to Windermere in August 1945 to begin the long process of recovery. We expect that it will be widely used by teachers with their students and we wish to support them in this endeavour.

The lesson materials and resources that we have produced are aimed at students in Years 7 & 8 in a range of subject areas:  History, Religious Studies, Spiritual Moral Social and Cultural development, and English. They will be freely available for teachers to access and download from our website. All of the lessons use testimony from ‘The Boys’ which has been extracted from Martin Gilbert’s 2017 publication of the same name.

It is an honour and a privilege to have Sir Martin's book part of this important educational endeavour!

Defending History honours Rachel Kostanian on her 91st Birthday,,
By Professor Dovid Katz, posted 28 January 2019:

The Defending History community, which has been following the amazing inspirational work of dear RACHEL KOSTANIAN for three decades now, will be celebrating Rachel's 91st birthday, God willing, next Sunday, January 31st 2021.
For a quarter century Rachel led Lithuania's only genuine, historically dignified Holocaust museum/exhibit ("The Green House" at Pamenkalnio 12, part of the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum), insisting on the accurate history in the face of vast political pressures and personal campaigns against her.  All the while, she showed her museum and the streets of Old Town Vilna to thousands of people a year, from local schoolchildren and adults to visitors from every part of the world.
Rachel is the author of "Spiritual Resistance in the Vilna Ghetto" (with an introduction by Sir Martin Gilbert), and of numerous publications issued by the Green House during her tenure, including a massive catalogue volume that is itself one of the best guides to Lithuanian Holocaust history.
