You Can Lead Consulting

It's great to start a new year with the resolve to put your best ideas into practice - ideas that will make a real difference to the people and communities you serve. To help get you into the right frame of mind, I wrote the following blog full of inspiring stories about leadership by ordinary people like you and me. They show what people can do when they really care. In the last section of this newsletter you will find a Q and A block based on one of the problems I write about in my forthcoming book 'You Can Lead'. My latest news on the book is that it is with the printer, and will be available soon. I'll keep you posted.
Leadership stories that inspire
Like me, you have many stories about special times or moments when leadership made all the difference. The best stories are truly inspiring – they show what can be done in difficult circumstances and often by people not much different from ourselves. They encourage us to lift our sights or try for something we thought was out of reach. Or to dig deeper and be less timid or reticent in what we strive for.

Q. It's frustrating. All I want is for people to do what I ask them to. I have explained what needs to be done, so why don't they just get on with it?
A. In today's workplace, being in charge and having authority is not enough. People want to be involved in making decisions, to be consulted and have a say in how they do their work. You need their trust and confidence. This will take time to build. Get away from your desk and get to know each person. Talk to them. Build relationships and invite every one to solve problems and find solutions as a team.
