Welcome to our March newsletter! Below you’ll find information on our upcoming AGM, some exciting funding and events news, and more happenings from your network.

AGM 2017

It’s that time of year again! The Annual General Meeting of the SSEN will be held in Union St CoWorking on the 30th March between 18:00–20:00, We hope you all can join us for networking & to chat about the Social Enterprise scene in Sheffield. There will be opportunities to meet the new members of the management committee and to hear more about what we have planned for 2017!

Lloyds Bank School for Social Entrepreneurs Programme

The SSE support programmes have opened again for social entrepreneurs & there are three options this time:
  1. StartUp - if you want to create something new, or have started trading in the last two years & turn over less than £15,000
  2. TradeUp - if you've started trading at least a year ago & turn over more than £15,000
  3. ScaleUp - if you've been trading for more than two years & turn over more than £75,000

Art from the Heart event
31st March, Bamforth Building, Burton Street Foundation


An exhibition of art work and photography prepared by Burton Street clients with learning disabilities and also by service users with Dementia, there will also be contributions from some of our other tenant organisations. We hope that you will be able to attend the Official opening as our guest. The exhibition is being officially opened by the fantastic Sheffield artist Joe Scarborough on Friday 31st March 7-9pm, but then will be open all weekend 1st and 2nd April where we will be running craft workshops for the whole community and then will be open to visitors during the following week Monday 3rd- Wednesday 5th April. Also on display “as featured in Tuesday 14th March The Star Newspaper” will be our newly completed mural depicting many scenes of Sheffield at work and in leisure. The mural has been painted by the talented artist Michael Harter, who will also be attending.

Social Enterprise Yorks & Humber
Get Social Finance Ready
Trading charities and social enterprises are increasingly looking to social finance to fund expansion, new projects and working capital. Social finance is new and hardly understood by many organisations.

Are you thinking about developing something new or need working capital. Thought about grants, loans, bonds, crowdfunding, community shares or a mix of these forms of social finance.
Get Social Finance Ready will help you answer these questions.
Get Social Finance Ready is a 6 weeks’ programme targeting organisations looking to achieve social impact and profit; and senior staff or trustees with responsibility for project development and/or organisational management.
The first two sets of sessions are now booking.

Developing the network

We've been doing some survey work with some of our members to ensure that we can help your network provide the services you want it to. We'll be doing some more of this, and bouncing ideas off you over the next couple of months. The growth of the SSEN is funded by the National Lottery through Big Lottery Fund.

Social Enterprise Exchange still has plenty of help available for social enterprises in our area, including workshops, grants, pro bono assistance & mentoring - there's a StartUp programme for potential social entrepreneurs & new initiatives as well as a Transform programme for organisations wanting help to grow. Social Enterprise Exchange - Evaluation Opportunity

#SOCENTXchange are now seeking to procure and commission external independent monitoring and evaluation to accompany the project from April 2017 to June 2019 including production of interim reports in June 2017 and June 2018, and a final report in June 2019. Contract value up to a maximum of £15,000.

Mentors from Sheffield's tech startups help local charities, social enterprises & community initiatives with advice on their digital needs. The next one is 24th March.
