The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things.  -Galatians 5:22-23

For Your Prayers: weekly bulletin announcements

Here are weekly prayer requests for each week between now and the next issue of The Sower. Please share them with your congregation by whichever method works best, whether it be in your bulletin, in the pastoral prayer or some other way. Thank you!

For Sunday, July 24
Studying the Bible, prayer, fellowship and accountability are important Christian practices that happen in Sunday School for all ages. Pray for those who are organizing Sunday School programs for the next school year and for those who will lead and teach.

For Sunday, July 31
Next weekend Marco Guete will teach a workshop in Spanish on pastoral ethics in Muscatine, Iowa. Pray for him as he prepares and travels and pray for the fellowship and learning of those Central Plains pastors who attend.

For Sunday, August 7
Shana Peachey Boshart is attending a training in intercultural competence this week. Revelation 7 paints a picture of a time when people from every nation, tribe, people and language gather before God's throne in praise. Pray that our conference will live out this vision now as a sign of the Kingdom.

For Sunday, August 14
Pray for students and teachers returning to school. May God bless their learning, may they both receive and reflect the love of God in their school settings. Pray for our church-related schools, Freeman Academy and Iowa Mennonite.
Next month, The Sower will be dated August 17.  Send submissions to by August 2
El Sembrador, the Spanish version of The Sower, is available here. Please be aware that there may be items in The Sower that are not in El Sembrador and that there may be items in El Sembrador that are not in The Sower.

Finance update

Central Plains budget fell slightly further behind in the month of June.  Annual meeting activity (income from registrations and offerings received) helped limit the amount of overall loss for the month, but on the positive side we are positioned better than we have been in years past two months into the new fiscal year.   Income for the month came in at $47,552.76.  Meanwhile expenses (which includes Annual Meeting expenses) came in at $49,676.07.  As a result, the fiscal year deficit increases to $5,876.66.  We are thankful for all of your contributions and thoughtful generosity at Annual Meeting!   –Stewardship Task Group

The Amazon calls!

Do you want to make 2017 a memorable year? Make plans now to join the Jan 7-19, 2017 Ecuador Partnership Learning and Fellowship Tour. Like previous learning tours we will visit Mennonite Churches in Quito to see first-hand their work with Colombian refugees and their community peace-making activities. New to this trip is a visit to the Amazon rain forest, where we'll meet indigenous Christians and experience one of the most diverse ecosystems on earth! Encourage your congregation to send a representative to build a stronger relationship with our brothers and sisters in Ecuador! Contact Joetta Schlabach ( / 651-290-2185) with questions or to reserve a spot. See details on the Upcoming Trips page of our web site.

Transitional Ministry Training

Transitional ministry has a unique place in the mission of the church. While "interim pastors" have for many years provided preaching and pastoral care between pastors, "transitional ministry" involves training to lead congregations through a process of preparation for entering a new chapter of leadership for a congregation. Central Plains counts on a small cohort of trained transitional pastors--would you consider being a transitional pastor? The training will be offered October 31 through November 4 at Amigo Center near Sturgis, Michigan. Go to for more information, brochure and registration material. –Tim Detweiler

More details on the fall women's retreat

All women are invited to attend the Central Plains Mennonite Women's Retreat this fall at Swan Lake Christian Camp near Viborg, SD. Plan to arrive before 10:00am for coffee and cinnamon rolls on Saturday, September 17 and stay through the noon meal on Sunday, September 18.
The focus this year will be on actually retreating… away from our busy lives and responsibilities and into a beautiful and peaceful place in nature, where meals are provided and friends are close by. Debra Worth, who works with New American women from around the world, will share stories during worship services both mornings around the theme of “Finding solace and joy in faith.” Interest sessions will be offered on Saturday afternoon. Mouthwatering meals will be created by camp staff. And something new to look forward to will be a laidback coffee house on Saturday evening in the beautiful new retreat center overlooking the lake.
Let others know about this “retreatful” retreat and plan to come! Look for a flier and registration list in your church or contact Elisabeth Harder Schrock (, 5074272771) to register by September 4.
Have an uplifting story to tell? A new song you've been working on? A funny skit? Plan to share it during the coffee house on Saturday evening!
