Community Sector Award Nominations Now Open!


SAVE THE DATE! The 2015 Community Sector Ball and Awards Night
is on Friday, November 27, Lismore City Hall.
 
Get ready to say a big ‘Thank You’ to the region’s dedicated community sector workers and volunteers who work tirelessly to make the world a better place to live in! Nominations are now open for the 2015 Community Sector Awards, which recognise the vital and outstanding contribution of individuals and programs to our community.
The awards are organised by the Northern Rivers Social Development Council (NRSDC) in partnership with other organisations and nominations will be open until 5pm Friday, October 30.

“Pathways to Care” and “Crossing the River” Bereavement Workshops provide local community support for those bereaved through suicide.

Healthy Competition in the NFP Space

Recent reforms in the community service space have increased the likelihood of competing with For-Profit organisations.The article by Spark Strategy,Rise Above the Not-For-Profit Rivalry – 3 Ways To Be A Healthy Competitor In The NFP Space identifies three steps to prepare for this noting that “NFPs have the resources and dedication to make more impact and consumers should be choosing them over for-profits.”

Social Procurement Australasia commissioned Joanne McNeill to look at policy perspectives in Australian social procurement practice. The report includes case studies on three State government departments with social procurement programs.It looks at approaches to developing and implementing social procurement strategies more generally.

Study of Adolescents and Suicide: Update

The School of Psychiatry of the University of New South Wales, with the support of the Anika Foundation for Research in Adolescent Depression and Suicide, have modified their study on adolescents who have experienced the death of a relative or a friend.
The major modification is that they now include young people who have experienced the loss between 6 months and ten years ago (contrary to three years), when the loss occurred when they were between 12 and 18 years old.

Report: Timing Early Intervention

'Better to have a fence at the top of the cliff than a fleet of ambulances at the bottom.'
Such is the call for early intervention, timing interventions so they prevent legal problems from forming and escalating, rather than patching things up once the crisis has struck. This short paper will briefly discuss the complexities of timely early intervention and the importance of tailoring legal assistance services so that they match a client's particular legal needs and their personal capabilities.

NCOSS Celebrates 80 Years Working to End Poverty

The Sydney Festival for Civil Society is the newest event in the NCOSS Calendar. The biennial festival will bring together people from civil society across New South Wales to share ideas, knowledge and skills and celebrate our 80th birthday.To be held on 14th October 2015, it will include a string of events: conference with keynote speakers and panel discussions; expo style “village” where civil society organisations can showcase their talent and value; networking lunches for civil society CEOs; and opportunities to celebrate NCOSS 80th birthday and the achievements of civil society.

The Second National LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care Conference aims to explore how communities, governments, service providers and older LGBTI people work together to promote healthy ageing for older LGBTI people and to ensure that the needs of older LGBTI people are understood, respected and addressed in Australia’s aged care policies, programs and services.
