2-day Maker Camp for 12-16 year olds

The Youth Connections Clubhouse is running Spark-Fun, a two-day holiday program on
5-6 October where participants will design, create and play with a Makey-Makey invention kit, connecting art, engineering, music and everything in-between to the internet of things.

Build a roaming doodle bot and learn how to code and drive intelligent robots PLUS get involved in art & tech activities galore!

Wear It Purple Day Event a Huge Success!

Compass, the Tweed/Southern Gold Coast LGBTIQAP+ Youth Network, had its first event for Wear It Purple Day on 25 August 2017 and it went off!
With a packed house of purple people at Hoyts Tweed City, the vibes were predictably positive.
The event showcased a new release film from the US called Real Boy, about a transguy going through his transition, premiered Keiah’s Story from the #breakthestigma series, and hosted a brilliant LGBTIQAP+ Awareness Panel, ‘You Can Ask That’.

Report: Ability Links Passes 80,000 Participants

When Zoe was just 14-months-old she was diagnosed with ‘clicky’ hips. Several failed operations over the next 20 years left Zoe with little confidence in herself and unsure how to reach her goals. Fortunately, Zoe was referred to Ability Links and was able to get the support she needed to pursue her goals and ultimately get the job of her dreams. Zoe’s story is just one of the 80,000 plus people who have experience first-hand the benefit of Ability Links NSW since its inception three years ago.

NGO Benchmarking Model Goes Live

To support capability development in the non-government organisation (NGO) sector, the Social Innovation Council designed the NGO Benchmarking model. The model went live last week after public consultations earlier in the year. NGOs have six weeks to complete a voluntary self-assessment starting on 21 August 2017. The NGO Benchmarking model is a self-assessment tool that aims to help NGOs deliver efficient, high quality and innovative programs and services.

Court Support & Circle Sentencing in Ballina

The Aboriginal Services Unit advises that Court Support & Circle Sentencing is now available at Ballina on Thursday 22 September at Ballina Aboriginal Child & Family Centre,10 Hayman St, West Ballina.

ACOSS call to action to protect our social security safety net

ACOSS has launched a video with a petition calling on government to stop the cuts and stop the attack on people who have the least.

National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety: Survey

ANROWS (Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety) invites you to participate in its 2017 Stakeholder Survey. The survey is part of a process to ensure that ANROWS is responsive to the needs of our key stakeholders: policy developers, practitioners and researchers.

The Office of the eSafety Commissioner offers free cybersafety resources and support for the community, including copies of a free cybersafety resource booklet for parents that would be a great resource for the community to have access to.

New Community Food Centre workshop

Murwillumbah Community Centre is helping create a new Community Food Centre! They are inviting local community members and organisations to come and share their ideas and  get involved in the design, planning and creation  of the centre at a workshop on Tuesday 12 September, 10:30am at Red Cross Hall in Knox Park.

2-Day Transgender Conference

A 2-day Transgender Conference will be held in February 2018, for health care providers as well as transgender people and their families. It’s on 10-11 February 2018 in Brisbane.

Trans@School Community Forum

The LGBTI Legal Service, Anti-Discrimination Commission Queensland and Legal Aid Queensland invite you to a community forum to understand important issues affecting trans children and young people, their parents, principals, teachers, and other stakeholders. The event will be held at the QuAC premises at 30 Helen Street, Teneriffe, Qld, on 16 September 2017.

Festival Of Good Humans

The Festival of Good Humans is where good humans come together to do great things. Over one week in Spring (28 September – 4 October), Connecting Up in partnership with Fifty Acres and Community Sector Banking will lead the way sparking conversations, think tanks, storytelling and a street party all in the name of celebrating and collaborating with not-for-profit organisations, government and business communities working together.

Family Advocacy is traveling up the North Coast of NSW in September to talk with families and present information on inclusive schooling and advocacy skills. The workshops and information sessions in Grafton and Lismore are for families only to attend so that they are comfortable sharing their stories and asking questions.

There’s a new private residential addiction treatment program in Murwillumbah called Gunnebah, offering individualised care and work with most substance and behavioural addictions. Concessional places are now available.

Empowered Women Support Groups

YWCA NSW AND The Lismore Women’s Health and Resource Centre will be facilitating the Empowered Women support groups for women that have experienced Domestic and Family Violence. The next program is scheduled to start 16 October 2017.

Support After Suicide Group in Lismore

Lifeline’s Northern Rivers’ centre will be offering a Support After Suicide group in Lismore from late September to mid-December this year. They are encouraging people of adult age who have experienced the loss of someone close to them through suicide to contact Lifeline’s Lismore office if they are interested in being part of such a group.

Aboriginal Chronic Conditions Network

A newly established the Aboriginal Chronic Conditions Network (ACCN) will work to improve the experience and delivery of healthcare for Aboriginal people with chronic conditions in NSW.

Ballina Dementia Friendly Community: Cafe Sebastian Launched

FSG Australia is working with the local community & businesses to establish initiatives specifically focused on developing a dementia friendly community. Café Sebastian (located in the Ballina Fair) is a Dementia Friendly Community café in Ballina that people living with a dementia can visit.

2017 Regional Homelessness Summit in Ballina

Homelessness NSW invites people to attend the 2017 Regional Homelessness Summit which will take place on October 19-20 in Ballina. The Summit will coincide with National Anti-Poverty Week and will feature presentations, panels and workshop exploring best practice responses to addressing and prevent homelessness in a regional context.

Housing & Homelessness Sector Information Forum

The Gold Coast Homelessness Network invites people to the Housing & Homelessness Sector Information Forum, being held Tuesday 26 September 2017, 9am-12pm (AEST) at Genesis Church in Carrara, Qld.

Reducing Homelessness to Zero

A new initiative is aiming to bring homelessness in Adelaide down to zero, Pro Bono News reports.
The Zero Project, launched by the Don Dunstan Foundation, is targeting rough sleeping in Adelaide’s CBD in a bid to achieve functional zero homelessness – where the number of homeless people on any given night is no greater than the housing placement availability.

1,078 Social and Affordable Homes Coming Soon to Sydney

With the help of Mission Australia, Sydney’s Ivanhoe Estate will be overhauled to offer more than 1,000 new social housing dwellings and affordable homes.

LC National Readiness Grants – New funding round now open

The NDIA is accepting applications for ILC National Readiness Grants (Round 2) in Activity Area One – Information, linkages and referrals. Applications for the next funding round for ILC – National Readiness Grants (Round 2) opened on Wednesday 16 August 2017 and close at 2pm AEST on Friday 29 September 2017.

Disability Representative Organisations Program Grants

The Disability Representative Organisations (DRO) Program aims to support National Disability Representative Organisations (DROs) for people with disability, and/or represent disability service providers who support people with disability. The grants are available for activity from 1 January 2018 until 30 June 2020. Applications Close: 6 October 2017, 2pm.

Local Contact, Support & Case Coordination Services
for Male DFV Victims

The Department of Justice is seeking to engage the services of appropriate organisations to provide support through initial contact, assessment, and case coordination of support to male victims of domestic and family violence (at ‘Threat’ and ‘Serious Threat’ risk of harm) in identified areas across NSW. Closing date: 28 September 2017, 11am.

NSW Carers Investment Program

The Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) is providing $5.6m over three years for projects that will improve the well-being of carers. FACS will fund projects that best align with the five focus areas identified in the NSW Carers Strategy and will consider applications from a wide range of organisations. Closing date: 29 September 2017, 2pm.

Celebration Grants

Celebration Grants are for events and festivals that celebrate our cultural diversity. Applications are now open and will close 29 September 2017.

NSW Premier’s Fund for Social Cohesion

The Premier’s Fund for Social Cohesion is a small grants program that supports community-led events and activities that bring together people from diverse cultural backgrounds to discuss and celebrate diversity. Closing date: 9 October 2017, 12pm.

The Deaf Society has confirmed to run the sign language courses, beginners Auslan Sign Language 1 & 2 courses in term 4 at Lismore, from 17 October 2017.

Child Safe Organisation Training – Disability

In partnership with Family and Community Services, the NSW Office of the Children’s Guardian has developed Child Safe Organisation training for the disability sector. A workshop will be held in Casino on 25 September.
