Homelessness Connect Days

After the success of last year’s event in Lismore a number of services will once again be participating in Homelessness Connect Days, in Lismore at the Winsome Hotel on August 8 and at 63 Hickey Street in Casino on August 9. Both events run from 10am until 2pm.

On the day people can connect with homelessness service providers, housing staff, legal specialists, and other service providers.

Defiant Lives: The Rise and Fight of the Disability Rights Movement

If you missed its opening at the Sydney Film Festival, don’t despair! A screening of this award nominated film is being held at Ballina Fair Cinemas, 11.30am on 14 August. Supported by Social Future’s Far North Cost Ability Links, the screening will be followed by a Q&A session with some of Australia’s key disability rights activists.

Report on Northern Rivers Public Transport highlights current gaps and future opportunities

Social Futures has released a report on public transport services across the Northern Rivers as part of an inquiry led by its Transport Development Project.

The inquiry found existing public transport provides basic cover during school periods for the areas studied. However, large gaps exist during school holiday periods, weekends and during afterhours.

Ten Champions for Youth Mental Health

Congratulations to the 10 participants of the Youth Advisory Group (YAG) at headspace Lismore who have just completed a 7-week Youth Advocate Training Program.
The hNO training program covered modules in youth mental health, an introduction to headspace, youth participation, caring for self, youth leadership, event and project management and communicating their message.

headspace joins warning over To the Bone film

headspace has issued a warning for parents, teachers and young people ahead of the Australian release of the new Netflix movie To The Bone. The National Youth Mental Health Foundation has joined other Australian mental health organisations in voicing its concerns around the films portrayal of anorexia nervosa.

Training Alert: Pro-Social Modelling & Collaborative Family Work

Pro-social modelling is an approach to the supervision/case management of involuntary clients which has been shown in numerous research studies to be related to improved outcomes for clients. Social Futures is running 3-day training on 31 July-2 August in Grafton.

ITC Support Officer – Western NSW

The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Support Officer is responsible for providing frontline ICT support to all Social Futures staff across Western and Far Western NSW. The position will also manage the ICT help desk by actioning enquiries via phone, email, in person. The provision of efficient ICT services is critical to the day to day workings of all Social Futures teams. Applications close 19 July 2017. Based in Dubbo / Orange with requirement for travel across western NSW.

Inquiry into the Prevention of Youth Suicide

Parliament’s Committee on Children and Young People is commencing an inquiry into the current approaches aimed at preventing youth suicide in New South Wales.  The closing date for submissions to the inquiry is Thursday 31 August 2017.

Working in Communities After Disasters

Red Cross will be running a two-hour information session for people working to support the community of Tweed, Murwillumbah and Villages  after the recent floods. The Information Session will be held on Thursday 20 July, 10am-12 noon at Murwillumbah Community Centre.

Interrelate Lismore has two upcoming free parenting programs for August-September: Tuning into Kids  and Tuning into Teens.

New Group for Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse

Heartfelt House still has places available for the 18-week group program ‘Taking the first Steps’ starting soon. It is designed to support female adult survivors of child sexual abuse in their healing from the assault they endured as a child.

National Homelessness Week (7-13 August): Homelessness NSW events including NATIONAL LAUNCH

Smart, Skilled and Hired Youth Employment Program

The Youth Employment Program is a $65 million NSW Government program that targets young people aged 15 to 24 years in regions with high youth unemployment rates. It will work with young people to help them overcome employment barriers and get them into sustainable jobs, by working closely with local businesses and employers.
