Arkansas Teacher Corps is one of seven community partners chosen to host a team of first-year students from the Clinton School of Public Service who will complete Arkansas-focused public service projects during the 2022-23 academic year. The team of Alyssa Jones, Caleb Parker, Katlee Taylor-Freasier will survey teachers and education leaders, compile briefs on each priority school district, and draft the Arkansas Rural School Grow-Your-Own Playbook with recommendations regarding rural teacher recruitment and retention efforts.

ATC Staff Hold Team Retreat at DeGray Lake

Arkansas Teacher Corps staff gathered on September 12-14 for a retreat at DeGray Lake State Park in Bismarck, AR. For new staff and returning team members alike, the three-day retreat provided the perfect opportunity to get to know each other, reconnect, and build community among our team. From core values to program expectations to professional development logistics, the ATC team is ready for the 2022-23 year!

ATC Staff, Fellows Attend Edu Innovation Rally

On September 26-27, Arkansas Teacher Corps staff and fellows attended the 2022 Education Innovation Rally in Hot Springs, AR hosted by the U of A’s Office of Innovation for Education. ATC executive director Brandon Lucius and ATC director of institute Matthew Caston led breakout sessions on teacher retention and team leadership respectively. ATC teacher coach Kendra Ide, recruiter Whitney Carter, summer equity co-facilitator Dasnee McChristian, and fellows Ava Hollins-Rogers (ATC ’20) and Tyler Lewis (ATC ’20) were also in attendance.

1st Application Deadline for 2023 Cohort is Nov 1

Arkansas Teacher Corps is now accepting applications for the 2023 Cohort. Applicants will be considered for admission after each of three deadlines: November 1, January 1, and March 1. Successful applicants will begin training in summer 2023. Interested individuals must submit an application online through our new portal that will now allow applicants to save their progress and request up to three official recommendations.

ATC is Hiring New Teacher Coaches!

It is with a heavy heart that we share Mr. Rick Newburn, 2021 ATC fellow and 7th grade math teacher at Jack Robey Middle School, passed away September 17, 2022 after a sudden and hard-fought battle with cancer. As a leader and colleague, Mr. Rick has had such a huge impact on our ATC family and the Pine Bluff community. He was dedicated in his journey to becoming an educator serving first as a substitute teacher and then interventionist before joining ATC, and it was his love for his students that propelled him forward through this work. Alongside his ministry as a pastor over the past thirteen years, Rick was called to a higher purpose of making a difference in his community and in the lives of those around him. He has certainly impacted the lives of many here at ATC, and he will definitely be missed. We ask that you keep friends and family in your thoughts during this time.

U of A Offers New Pathway from Para to Teacher
|
|
|
Starting this fall, the U of A now offers a path for paraprofessionals to earn a degree in education while continuing to work in their hometowns. The new "paraprofessional transition" pathway serves as a starting point for parapros already working in school systems around the state who want to obtain a bachelor's degree. The degree program is entirely online, so participants don't need to leave home to participate. After earning a bachelor's degree through the U of A, students are eligible to apply to an alternative licensure program (like Arkansas Teacher Corps) to become fully licensed teachers.
