To&Through Middle Grades Network Schools Convene for Three-Day Summer Institute

BEGINNING TO TACKLE NEW PROBLEMS OF PRACTICE
The To&Through Middle Grades Network (MGN) convened school leaders, teachers, and counselors across the network's two cohorts for our annual Summer Institute at the beginning of August. In addition to building community among MGN educators, the institute launched their planning for the upcoming academic year.

Using the To&Through Project's forthcoming Grades Monitoring Tool, school teams explored their own and others' data to understand which students might be in need of the most support. School teams then reviewed data on students' experiences that they collected this past spring and developed problems of practice around which they will center their change ideas this fall.

Educators also heard from keynote speakers Chris BalmeErica Hodgin, and Camille Farrington, who shared various ways to center students in the work. To take this focus on student voice to the next level, schools in our second cohort will participate in the new MGN Student Fellowship. The fellowship harnesses the voices and leadership of students from each MGN school to inform their school and the network's overall efforts around improving students' sense of belonging and co-designing middle school environments where they and their peers can thrive. We are excited to further elevate students in this way and look forward to the distinct impact it will have on the change ideas that school teams test during their MGN journey.

New To&Through Team Members

NAOMI WILFRED & SULEYMAN RAHAMETO

Naomi Wilfred is joining our team this September as a To&Through Middle Grades Network Coach. During her recent tenure with CPS, Wilfred gained experience teaching and creating curricula for almost every elementary grade level and in all subject areas. As a teacher, her classroom was a space dedicated to antiracism and the learning of our history. Wilfred also served on schools' culture and climate teams, Instructional Leadership Teams, and most recently, as an education consultant. A graduate of the Surge Fellowship and Abolition Design Lab, Wilfred will continue this work to foster healing, identity-centered, and joyful learning experiences through the MGN.

Suleyman Rahameto is our newest Research Analyst. Suleyman studied economics, statistics, and data science at St. Olaf College and graduated this past spring. Born and raised on Chicago's North Side, Suleyman is passionate about giving back to the many communities that raised him and fellow CPS students throughout the years, particularly Chicago’s communities of color, of immigrants, and of refugees.
