Quick Hits

The Main Event
The #2 Alabama Crimson Tide took down the #1 Clemson Tigers 45-40 in an instant classic National Championship game.

After trading early blows to enter halftime tied at 14, Alabama and Clemson exploded in the second half with 57 combined points to make this the highest-scoring title game ever (85). The offensive fireworks were led on the Alabama side by running back Derrick Henry, who ran for 158 yards and three touchdowns (while breaking Bama's all-time rushing record), and tight end O.J. Howard, who registered a career-high 208 receiving yards and a pair of touchdown catches. Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson kept the Tigers in the the fight, accounting for 478 yards of offense and four touchdowns.

Tied 24-24 with less than 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter, the game turned when Alabama head coach Nick Saban called an onside kick (don't worry, there's already a horribly unnecessary Sports Science for it) that his team would recover. Bama scored a touchdown less than a minute later, then returned a kickoff 95-yards for a touchdown on their following possession, putting the game out of reach for Clemson despite a feverish comeback attempt.

Love him or hate him, Nick Saban is a college football legend. He's won five national championships (four with Bama, one with LSU), placing him just behind fellow Alabama legend Bear Bryant (6) for most all-time.

Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin may not have many teeth, but he has scored many, many NHL goals. He knocked in a pair during Washington's 7-1 drubbing of the Ottawa Senators, which put him over 500 for his career, making him the fifth-fastest player to reach the sought-after milestone. At his current rate, Ovechkin is on track to surpass hockey legend Wayne Gretzky as the greatest goal-scorer in NHL history. In keeping with Good Old Sport tradition, here's our obligatory Paulina Gretzky mention.

Americans Carli Lloyd and Jill Ellis were big winners at the 2015 FIFA Ballon d'Or, an awards ceremony recognizing the top soccer players and coaches in the world. Lloyd, a midfielder for the U.S. Women's National Team (USWNT), was named FIFA Women's Player of the Year, likely due to her hat-trick in the 2015 World Cup Final against Japan. Ellis, the USWNT's coach, was awarded Coach of the Year for being lucky enough to have Lloyd on her team.

Related: Argentinian Lionel Messi won the Ballon d'Or for a record fifth time, recognizing him as the greatest male soccer player in 2015.

Bad Sport
Soon-to-be former Washington Redskins quarterback RG3 couldn't have looked sadder cleaning out his locker yesterday. He left just one thing: an "inspirational" note that was clearly a final shot at management, which implied he will succeed, create, and be happy, despite "unreasonable" and "self-centered people." Not that the note will ever be read by Redskins coach Jay Gruden or owner Dan Snyder, who are probably more worried about how they're going to spend the rest of RG3's money on retaining free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins.
