1. Report: Social media use is increasing despite privacy fears

The good news is that social media use is growing in all markets. To throw some numbers at you, the world population is approximately 7.6 billion. Of those, 3.3 billion are active social media users. When you look at mobile, 3.1 billion people access social media via mobile. Those numbers are projected to grow. Takeaway: if you aren't actively using social media to grow your business, start using it. If you are, keep growing your followers. There is room for your particular niche online. How does social media relate to SEO? It's off-page SEO. It is something you do to gain followers and drive new and existing customers to your business. This drives traffic to your website and increases your visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs). 

2. The companies and organisations that have already spectacularly fallen foul of the new GDPR laws

Oh, you thought we were done discussing the GDPR? Never. Not just yet. If you need a bit of humor in your day, here is a list of companies that failed spectacularly in their GDPR rollouts. My favorite is the company that exposed all users' emails to all recipients of their email proclaiming they take data protection seriously. Also, there is a nice summary of your rights under the GDPR near the top of the page.

3. Blog SEO: How to Search Engine Optimize Your Blog Content

In addition to social media, blogging is a great way to drive traffic to your website and increase your business customers and clients. Increased traffic leads to improved rankings online. Two questions I often get is, "what do I write about?" and "how do I optimize the blog post"? The first question is the subject of another newsletter post. The latter question is answered by Lindsay Kolowich at HubSpot. She provides this lovely guide to keywords, meta descriptions, URLs, link creation, and a few other SEO-related areas. If you want to improve your writing and increase your audience, then this is one place I would start.

4. The Optimal Local Landing Page For Law Firms

r/t David Mihm. What can you learn about website design from law firms? If you survey 50 metro areas and four legal practices you can determine what you should use on a landing page to drive traffic and conversionsfor any type of business. Most landing pages are the HOME page, and most law firms put their location and business name in the title. To build trust, most law firms display their awards and client testimonials. They display contact information and the websites are responsive. "So what?", you may think, "these are good web design practices". True, but common sense isn't so common. A well-designed site keeps users on the site and brings in new clients and customers. The survey results provide a nice checklist for any business hoping to increase conversions.

5. What Nobody Tells You About Painful Regrets

Life does not provide a backspace key. What do you do when regret looms so large in your life you beat yourself up over it? Shapiro writes “Of course, shit does happen: illness, heartache, violence, betrayal. We weather our losses, but we don't—we can't—regret them because we had no agency in creating them. We can only regret choices that we make, or choices that we actively don't make. That's why it's so painful. We decided on that path. We set it into motion.” Here is some simple advice for the complex problem of how to move on.

And Now for Some Company News...

We love SEO work, but we also love to have a laugh and get outside. Last weekend, I went hiking at one of my favorite spots growing up, High Shoals Falls at South Mountains State Park. The waterfalls were spectacular. The steepness of the climb, not so much. The dog loved all of it.

We saw families out, playing together in the streams...and they didn't have their noses buried in their smartphones. I hope you remember to get outside this summer, unplug, and take a break. We have been steadily busy this spring and summer, and time off is so important for us all.
