1. Google and your business' data

You cannot have a product or service-based business website without having to sign up for Google Analytics and Search Console. (At least, if you want to get found online and rank well as a small business.) This implies you have a Google account. Thus, Google is using your data in exchange for their free services.

What can you do to protect your privacy and understand what information Google gathers about you and anonymizes? Visit their Google Business Privacy page. You have the option of deciding how much or how little of your business data you want Google to store and share. 

You can read and understand what security controls Google implements as well as how they comply with privacy laws within the USA, the EU, and elsewhere. If you want to understand your personal data privacy with Google, please visit their main (non-business) Privacy page or run a security check up on your Google My Account page.

Now, you may be wondering why I have all this emphasis on data privacy and security when this is an SEO newsletter?

In short, handling your client and customer data well and fairly goes a long way in building trust with you, your business, and products and services. I doubt any of you want your personal data and information stolen. You want to ensure you have the controls in place to ensure none of your client data is breached. Even if all you have is a spreadsheet with a few dozen names and emails on it, safeguard it well. Data privacy enforcement is a good business strategy.

2. World back up day

March 30th was World Back up day 2018. This is an annual reminder from me to you to make sure your website is backed up, your laptop or desktop have at least 2 backups of your data, with at least one off-site. (Google Drive offers free and cheap automated offsite backups of your data.) Last but not least, you should review your passwords and ensure you have strong passwords. If you have any questions about how to do this, please email or call me.

What does this have to do with SEO? This falls under "business strategy". It is a bad idea to lose data. Do not lose your client or any other kind of data. Just don't. Especially when Google Drive is free and offers paid monthly plans that start at $2 a month.


3. How should you ask for online reviews? The pros and cons of each approach

One of the most awkward aspects of running a business is asking clients or customers for online reviews. Ideally, you will receive organic reviews slowly over the course of weeks and months, from people who are so happy with your product or service that they find your Google, Yelp, Facebook or other review pages, and voluntarily leave a review. Generally, positive reviews help drive traffic to your business and increase your website's rankings on search engine results pages.

What do you do when your clients and customers do not leave reviews? How do you approach them to take time out of their busy lives to leave a review for you? David Mihm sent out this wonderful article in his newsletter that outlines the different approaches to asking clients for reviews, along with the pros and cons.

My 25 cents: figure out which approach best aligns with your personal and company values, then do that one. Never pay for reviews or links.

4. 14 ways to get free advertising for your business

It can be tough to be a small- to medium-sized business. You need to compete and let people know your company exists along with what you offer, but you don't quite have the revenues to spend on advertising.

Not all advertising requires money. Most of it requires networking, online and off. HubSpot has compiled a few ideas for you that require little to no cash outlay.

5. Don't wait for perfect. Do it now.

Jake and Becca launched Dubsado with a toddler and a baby in tow. Oh Lordy. No, it wasn't the best time. But would there ever have been a "best time"? Likely not.
