1. Yes, The GDPR Will Affect Your U.S.-Based Business

The General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) start May 28th for any business that has European customers. The long and short of it is that if you have any international clients at all, you need to pay attention to the implementation of these regulations.

Even if you do not have international clients it is not a bad idea to follow the spirit of the regulations.

Why? The gist of the GDPR is that we have the right to our data, we have the right to know about any data any company has about us, and we have the "right to be forgotten". That means, if a company has any data about us, we have the right to see it and to ask them to remove it permanently.

Given all of the data breaches over the past few years, I'm sure most of us want more control over our personal data, and that you want to offer that same right to your clients.

In the next three sections of this newsletter, I will provide links to useful sites to help you bring your site compliant with the new regulations.

Caveat: I am not a lawyer. These are recommendations. Please seek the advice of a qualified attorney with regards to your own business.

2. Consider adding these written policies to your website.

Shopify has free templates you may use to add policies to your website, even if you are not a Shopify client. You add your company name, et al., and the templates will be autogenerated.

Again, please seek the advice of your attorney, as you may need additional "legalese" per your US state.

3. Consider adding a content reuse policy to your website

Most of us have the copyright symbol ("") in our website's footer. If you would like something more nuanced, consider replacing or supplementing general copyright with a Creative Commons license. You can share or not share your content in a variety of ways that still provides you with a measure of control but that may give your users some rights, rather than the restrictions inherent in general copyright.

4. GDPR Compliance and WordPress Forms: Everything You Need to Know

Here are a few ideas for "text blurbs" you can add to your website forms so that you are GDPR compliant. While the text is primarily aimed at WordPress users, the "text blurbs" that aid in GDPR compliance are useful for any website with forms such as for Contact or Newsletter Signups. Again, I am not an attorney, so please contact your lawyer regarding the appropriate text for your particular business and industry.

5. This One Question Will Make Every Decision In Your Life Easier

It is so easy to get off target and off schedule. When you have to accomplish a particular goal by a particular time and up to a particular standard, one question will get you there: "Will it make the boat go faster?"

And Now for Some Company News...

I have some sad news to pass on. Due to an unforeseen tragedy, I had to send Office Dog #1, Storm, and Office Dog #3, Rani, to the Rainbow Bridge at the start of this week. We are heartbroken, but we know that both dogs are at peace, happy and whole again, playing with their doggie friends on that great soccer field in the sky. We are grieving, so it took a few days before we could mail this newsletter.
