1. The decline of social traffic and the SEO renaissance

Takeaways: websites still matter, taking into account our love affair with social media. Make sure your blog and website have AMP. The latter increases access to your website via mobile phones by ensuring the posts load quickly. Social traffic can be fickle. You must grow targeted traffic, clients, and customers by creating and serving quality content.

2. Shared Hosting vs. Virtual Private Servers: A Performance Comparison
If you have worked with me, I harp on and on about the importance of quality website servers. If I have not liked the performance and service of your hosting company, I have likely pushed/requested/squalled for you to move your website to a company with great customer service and faster servers. Here is some data for you to ponder regarding managed servers vs. Virtual Private Server (VPS). Unfortunately, it doesn't compare platforms like Squarespace to Managed Wordpress and WordPress on a VPS. Takeaway: get your site as light and lean as you can. Speed matters. Very few people want to wait for a website to load, no matter how spectacular it might be.

3. The Importance of SEO: 3 Reasons Why Good Design Is Not Enough

Life is one big compromise. I have worked on some gorgeous sites where even when you type in the company name exactly, you cannot find the website short of typing in the domain name. Why is this? Because the site is completely visual, and there is little to no text anywhere stating what the site is for, and whom, much less why.

If the major search engines even know the site exists, the bots pull out what information they can, and move on, but it doesn't rank. In many cases, the search engines don't know the site exists because no one links to it and/or the web designer didn't add a Google Analytics ID and the website to Search Console to be indexed.

I love great design. But great design is not enough to get your site found by your desired clients unless you follow basic webmaster and search engine basics. Everything in moderation, from design to SEO. Do the Thing.

4. Why so many people make their password 'dragon'

One entry has stood out for 20 years now, in studies of the top passwords people use. It is "dragon". In my continuing series on security and how it improves your SEO by improving your user experience because no one wants their data hacked, this article looks at how people pick their passwords. Takeaway: not one single password should fail to include numbers, capital letters, and special characters. So, ~Drag0n!, not dragon. But don't pick dragon. Please.

5. The nine stages of creativity

Cartoonist Grant Snider illustrates what to expect during the writing process.

And Now for Some Company News...

After many stops and starts, I am writing the "Squarespace SEO for Busy Entrepreneurs" book/workbook. I have created the outline and I am now expanding it before I begin writing each section.

In personal news, I have committed to re-enrolling in my Ph.D. program in January 2019, with the intent to graduate in the summer with my degree, after taking a long break. Yes, I have been that close. No, it should not affect this business.
