Issue 18 Impact Zone Top 5 Newsletter

1. Privacy Policies and Other Legal Documents

Those of us doing business online have to comply with local and international regulations, including the GDPR. First, I am not a lawyer so if you have questions about the GDPR, please consult an attorney. Second, new and small businesses do not always have the revenue to consult an attorney for new regulations like the GDPR. As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, Shopify has some public legal documents, but they are for U.S. citizens.

Fear not, for the folks at Terms Feed have created a legal document generator for businesses based on their legal locations, such as Belgium. You can create a bespoke Privacy Policy, Terms and Conditions, End User License Agreement (EULA), Returns and Refunds, Cookies Policy, and a Disclaimer for your website. The document generator asks a series of questions, including your location, and then generates the documents. The service is not free, but it may cost less than an attorney.

2. World Password Day

May 3rd was World Password Day 2018. I know, I missed it, too. Until I read my email and saw the message from LastPass. This note is your friendly reminder to go back through and slowly change and update all of your passwords, particularly with a strong one. Here is a have link to Google's page for creating a strong password. My go-to for developing long passwords that are difficult to guess and break is Strong Password Generator. Now, what do passwords have to do with SEO? You want to keep your customer's data safe. Nothing destroys your branding faster than a data breach.

3. Categories and Tags

A simple thing that stresses out first-time bloggers and new web designers and developers is how to set up effective Categories and Tags. This article provides a simple overview of when to use each, and how. The author aimed the article at WordPress users, but the concepts are applicable to most website platforms. Properly used, categories and tags help search engines understand the content on your website better which should improve your rankings in SERPs (search engine results pages).

4. How Seth Godin would launch a new business with $1000 and 90 days to spare

If you have been racking your brain regarding how to better niche your business or how you can market your services and products on a limited budget, the inimitable Seth Godin provides one approach. In short, niche down as far as you can and that will drive the rest of your offerings. Also, provide something for free that demonstrates your value.

5. How to ensure your future is greater than your past

What got you to where you are now is not going to get you where you want to be. You have to let the past go, let past behaviors go that led to success or failure, and move towards the future you desire.

When you change the behaviors that got you here, then you can create the future you imagine. Whether your past is filled with success or failures or a little of both, let those habits go, and figure out what you need to move forward NOW. Open your mind and create anew as though past work has not happened.

And Now for Some Company News...

I began this company in September 2014. Originally, I called the company Impact Zone Digital Agency, LLC. I legally changed the company name to Impact Zone Consultancy, LLC in 2015. Along the lines of what is new is old again, I have legally changed the name back to the original with the office of the NC Secretary of State.

Why am I telling you this? if you do business with me, I don't want you to be confused. Also, to announce that I am formally offering web design and development, along with branding via Cherry Laurel Studio, and my usual SEO services.

Finally, stick to your vision folks. You know what you want to offer the world via your business. Nothing has actually changed with my business, but everything has changed. Words matter.
